Bobby McFerrin, perhaps most known for his hit song "Don't Worry, Be Happy", demonstrates the power of the pentatonic scale at the 2009 World Science Festival. Using audience participation, McFerrin shows that we all understand music innately.

Wow. That's fascinating.

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low,

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.

I always knew I had as much musical talent as Mozart.  But then, as usual, he started young and I didn't.

I think the show was rigged.  That is, I believe he'd already rehearsed it with some members of the audience.  Look how they sang the third without needing a definition of it  (Yes, I'm aware that I may be begging the question).  At that point most of the audience laughs because they aren't participating and they know something is up.  The laughter is a lot louder than the singing.  Or so it seems to me.

Prairie Home Companion shows sometimes include a routine where Keeler takes a few minutes to teach the audience sections different parts (SATB) and then everyone sings.  Just shows what can be done with a cooperative audience.  (And, it's real.  I was there.)

Actually, I would have sung the same tones automatically just as they did. I actually did sing them in my head while watching it. :)

Yeah, how could you ever doubt someone who just wants you to not worry and be happy. ;)

@Fiddlerman: But you're a pro, and you've been in music a long time. You have a well-developed musical intelligence and intuition.
