Or is it just my settings?

Usually it pops up at the bottom right of the screen, but nothing this morning.

The chat is not switched off, it's just not working. I contacted Chatwee, the plugin administrator this morning. Hopefully they will have it up and running soon. That is one strike against this particular chat widget. To top it off, it's a subscription based chat widget.
I may work together with our programer and have him develop a fully local chat platform completely non reliant on other domains and databases.
I hate not having more control.

Thanks Pierre - I see you have a notice at the top of forum now.

It's not on to have to pay for a service that isn't working, is it?! Maybe a local solution would be better, as you say.

I'm for restoring the old "Chantango" back. Didn't care much for the one one at all.

I'm sorry Ken, I don't follow. Which one do you prefer and why?

As for me, I prefer the one that we had just before the new one that is broken. It seems there are always 15 to 25 people in the new one and when I enter, there is no one logged in / on.

Not only that, but I find it's hard to "X" out of the new version.

But I guess that's just me.   :D

LOL Ken - for me it was the other way round - I can't quite put my finger on it - I just found the old one "awkward" - the only way I was "happy" with it was to have it in  a separate ( but obscured ) window while I'm working on something else ( not necessarily on the forum here ) - and I just found it "awkward" to tab around and find the message chat window - and I kind of like the way it is attached to the forum now and can just be minimized, but still be there... etc ( but, it all comes down to the way we use, configure, and what we do on our computer platforms )

The other thing was that I could never get the chatango "notifier" to work as expected ( I didn't have time to bother investigating the issue - it was probably my local configuration - I have a lot of "special networking stuff" that intercepts incoming TCP/IP, and can get-in-the-way of day-to-day traffic )

Horses for courses as they say !

As an iPad user, I was kind of happy the chat is down today, lol. I like to use it, but it hijacks my screen whenever I'm just trying to view the forum, lol. It insisted that I chat. :)

im sure your developer could create a chat for you, then you wouldn't have to pay extra for a service that is unreliable.

It's not obvious, even on the PC - click ( well you would tap on some kind of smart-phone / tablet I guess ( don't have one myself ) ) in the dark/black coloured top bar - and it will minimize ( and certainly on the Windows platform, using Chrome, IE, Safari and Opera browsers which I have to move between at times - it always behaves like that... ) - then just click ( tap I guess ) on the minimized bar to bring it up again when you need to...   dunno for sure

...just saying - I know for sure it was not obvious to some other "windows users"....  might still not work with your device, but check that idea out...  as I say - not "obvious" with no specific "minimize" button/icon

EDIT:  Yup - I agree about having "something under your own control" - absolutely - been down too many roads battling with / against "third-party-software" over the years, usually painful, and never fun.....

Thanks for your opinions Ken. Let's keep using it for a while. I think every new system requires some getting use to before it's comfortable. Personally I prefer this one for ease and also if I want to turn it off and surf the site/forum undisturbed.

I was wondering what was going on last night when the chat didn't pop up on the right. Glad it wasn't just me.

I think I like the new chat better than the old one. I like having it open on the side no matter where I am on the site. Like Bill, I used to keep the Chatango chat open in a different tab, so if I wanted to pay attention to the chat, I couldn't catch up in forum, and vice versa.

It is a little odd how this chat just assigns random names to anyone who is not logged in with an account, but that's not a deal breaker, just a quirk.

That's my two cents.

Since it was moved off the forum page I don't use it anymore, too much hassle... I liked the ease of the old chat, and often times had private convo's going on with members and non-members who asked questions and it was very helpfull to all. Not anymore...

now it's just a waste of space and bandwidth. Just sits over there in a big blank white rectangle with nothing going on... two circles going round and round...

dunno

You can actually turn it off Dennis. Thanks for your thoughts.
