My fiddle and mandolin teacher asked me to play mandolin on a few songs when he played guitar -- with the bassist from his band -- at a local pizza restaurant last night.

It was sooo much fun, I just had to share one of the songs with you folks. This is their cover of "Only Wanna Be With You" by Hootie and the Blowfish.

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low,

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.

Thanks everyone. I was a little nervous because I had never played any instrument in that type of situation but I had practiced the four songs to death, so I felt confident that I knew them pretty well.

Plus, I am probably more relaxed playing the mandolin even though I haven't been playing it very long because it's so much like playing guitar and, thanks to the frets, I don't have to worry about intonation like on the fiddle.

Great one Diane.

Couldn't tell that you where nervous. I hope my first public 'violin' performance goes that well.

Mine will be 'solo' in front of a couple of hundred new relatives in the Philippines in April. 'Aaaaaaah' But I'm not stressing....... MUCH bunny-headbang

Watching you being so calm gives me some hope and much inspiration  :)

Seen it all. Done it all. Can't remember most of dunno ..... What was I saying???? facepalm

Great video, looks like you guys were having fun.

I remember my grandfather playing the mandolin, although it was a somewhat different looking old bowl back.

Thanks for all the nice comments, folks. (I've be trying to reply to this for a few days, but had some troubles posting in the forum.)

@Ferret John: sorry to hear about your mando troubles, but congrats on buying a new one. Best of luck with it. I hope to see a Ferret Brothers video sometime soon!

@Fiddlestix Ken: yeah, this pizza place is really more of a bar, too.

It was so much fun, I hope I can do it again sometime. My teacher was thrilled with the performance and said that he'd have me play with him again.

Now, after my detour into rock 'n roll mando, back to traditional fiddle tunes.

:)

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.

Diane, you rock!

I am in a fiddle class, and have been wondering about giving mandolin a try :)

Go for it, Kim! The tuning is the same as a fiddle, so it's a no brainer. You'll pick it up in no time. It's a fun instrument and it's helping me learn fiddle tunes faster.

That was great Diane!  Very nice job, your sound fit in with the group perfectly :) .  It's tempting with all the Mando talk to look in to one here too lol, but with a new fiddle on the way soon (hopefully)...the checkbook will be fairly full for a while.
