This really is not a performance progress report but I've been doing a lot of work and the results may be of general interest.

1) What do you do if you have a great violin?  Play it.  What if you don't have a great violin but have an acoustic, an electric (Aquila) a ZOOM G1N and a Sienna 14 guitar amp ?  After many trials the best sound is the acoustic with the ZOOM box AND the Sienna.  Obviously this is for venues larger than my rec room smile

The electric is fine for the distortion sounds with the ZOOM but, in general, I don't like the piezo quack.  I have a Super Sensitive pick up on the acoustic and I think that is a much quieter set up.  (FM is offering a Barcus Berry which is similar to Super Sensitive but has a desirable jack mount.)

My FLIP CISCO.  I'm surprised that this recorder has to be so close to the sound source and then the sound is not so great anyway but the video is HD.  I could not record too well from 6 or 7 feet even tho the unit has a camera mount.

YouTube.  My Son says YouTube will not have free uploads forever !@?

Finally I have a video clip of sorts here where the backing track is too loud and the start and finish are extended while I push buttons and switches.

And that's the news from lake Wobegan.

Great playing! I wish there was more volume on the violin though.. From what I can tell you are playing accurately and I love the intonation!

As far as youtube goes.. Dailymotion is a very, very viable platform with less issues as far as copyright and censorship goes.

Oliver, I am sorry to say this but I did not hear the Fiddle in there.

But I am not used to hearing my fiddle either.

Could this be used as a audition video for The Prairie Home Companion.

I just could not resist that, sorry.

The only question is an audition for what ????

No, that was not supposed to be a "silent violin" demo!  There is an acoustic in there somewhere.  Fact is, the video was part of the testing I was doing with the different components and any connection with real music is accidental.

If I had $15,000 for a real violin I would dump all the gadgets dancing

@Aleive   Thanks for DailyMotion info.  Sorry about the low level violin but it was more a test video than a performance.

I try to be a fanatic about intonation.  After all, it is the only thing that matters to a listener even if we have dozens of additional worries as a performer !

I think I heard the fiddle.  Did it sound kind of like a flute?

I've learned so much from my mistakes that I've decided to make some more.

The elusive fiddle part has been discovered along with only one bad bow boo-boo.

But I like the other version better.  It's like "Where's Waldo?" but with the fiddle.

I'm teasing you. smile  I could hear your playing just fine and it was great.  It's a nice set-up you've got there.  Thanks for sharing it.

Thank you.  I will quote you to my wife about my "nice setup".  She thinks my area is a disaster but what does she know about music ????  dancing

Bravo Oliver. Your posts are always so interesting.
I enjoy so much seeing how you make it all fun.
One thing that you do on the unaccompanied version that you may want to think about is that you rush a few of the longer notes. Say around :35 and :37
The A and then the F when maybe you want to lengthen them instead. Draw them out and play them louder. Then GODDDDDD BLESS AMERICA....
You know what I mean smile
Thanks again, great job!

I have a constant awareness that I can not instantly start a note with the violin and so I tend to start early.

I sometimes get an abrupt sounding start if I hang back and then "dig in".

Needs work.  (As does having enough bow left to do the right thing!!)

PS  I can only hope that everyone is having fun !!

Oliver! I enjoy the view on your videos - pure old school industrial thumbs-up

I like your intonation.. And i wonder if You attempted to turn down the high frequences and up - the low a little? I think the sound could be wider ?dunno

Mad, I will tell you something that you may know already.  In that case, bear with me.

It is very difficult for me to know what sound the violin is making because of "under the chin" noise ..... the racket that comes out of the left "f" hole.  Maybe it is only my violin (?).  If I cover the "f" I hear a much different sound.

I wish I had an independent listener like you to help me tweak the settings whenever I play.

I am always surprised that my recordings sound better than I heard during making the recording but maybe could be improved.

My confusion gets worse with an electric violin that has no "f" holes (or much else).  My intonation with an electric is much better !!

Decisions,decisions !!!

Not only your violin, Oliver! =) EVs are much easier in that case - You can concentrate on sound effects and correcting the settings, obvious (no f-holes - no racket LOL =))

PS: My intonation is correctable with only one thing - DISTORTION jimi-hendrixduncecaproflroflrofl

@LB The fault lies in my failure to be in position to use more bow as cautioned by FM in a separate thread.

(I have been thinking of getting a longer bow.  That should help (?)

@MAD   I think you have something there.  Distortion is my friend.

Bravo Oliver, I heard and seen the fiddle on the second video.

Now I have to tell you I cannot play anything yet.

I am still trying.

About the electric Aquila, ZOOM G1N, Sienna 14 guitar amp and the piezo quac, Super Sensitive pick up on the acoustic and FM offering a Barcus Berry similar to Super Sensitive with a jack mount.  Not to mention the FLIP CISCO and doing it all in HD.

I am awe struck, I have absolutely no idea what any of that is, but it sounds good and as usual you make anything sound good. It would do no good to try to explain it to me, I would be lost.

If I could only play like you in a year or so then I would be doing great.

Try to keep those folks at Lake Wobegan supplied with music.

Thanks and hats off to you Kind Sir.

dazed  thumbs-up
