On the shoutbox I was discussing with some members about my neighbor who can't play the violin anymore because of a pinched nerve and being in wheelchair. His doctor says it is too dangerous for him to do so. His name is Dennis and he really wants the violin to go to someone who will appreciate it. After some discussion we came up with Huey, who was here everyday for the longest time until she got too busy with school and final exams. She is one of the people with a burning desire to learn to play the violin without actually having much of an opportunity to do so. Most of you probably know who she is.

To make a long story short. I now have the violin at hand, a donation made by LateBloomer for part of the shipping. Shipping will probably cost around $60. The violin has a case and a REAL bad bow. Of course I'll send the bow with the case as is but it would be great if someone had a bow to donate. I'll donate a brand new Kaplan rosin and $20 towards shipping but it would be nice is one more person donated $20 to make up the difference.

Here is the violin:

I can't really help with a bow, but I can make a donation to your web-site to help with shipping costs etc.

Thanks Terry for your generous donation.
Your $60 would easily cover a bow if that is what you want it to be used for?
If anyone would like to donate for strings the violin would probably sound many times better. I was thinking about putting on Zyez. Would leave the old ones in the case as spares for her.
If we use Terrys donation for a bow which I'll lower the price on to $50
Erich's donation for shipping. ($20, $10 over from Terry... $30 more to go on shipping) Possibly strings too.
I can just ship it the way it is too with no more donations and that would be fine too.

Thanks

Aww, I wanted to hear you play it. frown

Do you still need strings? I have that set of Pro-Arte strings that I'm never going to use..

Well yes. The thing is, are you sure you will never use them? They last a long time since they are wrapped carefully in a sealed plastic. Besides, I have so many strings here. I was thinking about just putting a set of Zyex on.

I'm certain. I don't like synthetic core strings. I guess I'm just a dork. xD

It probably has nothing to do with not liking synthetic core strings. Your instrument may not respond well to them. Trust me, with some instruments there is nothing better.

OK, so I replaced the strings with Zyex, I have Huey's address, I rosined and tested a new bow for her and I have enough money for shipping.
Thanks to all the donations.thumbs-up

Terry = $60 = Discounted FM Carbon Fiber Bow ($50) = $10 over

Erich = $30 = New Zyex Strings

Leah = $15

Kevin = $40

Fiddlerman = New Kaplan Premium Rosin

That leaves $65 for shipping which is more than enough, however. I was testing the instrument and it occurred to me that it is hard to hold with no shoulder rest. It's bad enough with that flat chin-rest. Does anyone have an extra shoulder-rest they would like to send to me before I ship the package to Malaysia?

I now have a spare shoulder rest. I'll send a picture tonight when I get home from work so you can say if it will be suitable.

evening Fiddlerman, eveningIMG_6702.JPGImage Enlarger all,

Here is a photo of the chinrest that I have spare. I bought it 3 weeks ago because my Wolf was too uncomfortable. Then I found out I could form it to the shape of my new one and its been perfect ever since. So it does mean that my new one is just taking up room in my case.

If you think it's suitable, I'll wrap it and send it to you. (I didn't keep the box unfortunately)

That would be great but don't you live in England. Maybe you could send it directly to her instead? Don't think it would cost more.
That way I can send it soon.

The violin has been packed and ready to ship for a few days. I am only waiting for Huey to send me her phone number as I believe you must have that on international shipping. thumbs-up I'll give you all the information that I have Terry as soon as I get an email from Huey. I don't think she has internet all the time while she is at the university.

Forgot to announce to everyone here that I sent the violin today. It's been picked up by USPS and will be on it's way to Malaysia. Thanks to everyone who donated. Will be exciting to hear of Huey's progress and such.

USPS Tracking number is: CJ462383005US
It can take up to 24 hours for it to show up in the system.
