Hi fiddle4fun I didn't read your post yesterday and I'm sorry to disappoint you but this is not an antique violin with a history, it's a new generic student violin

Fiddlerman actually lived and worked in Malasya, he must have friends and people he knows there.

I mean, he could have used those connections to make this donation faster and more efficient

Ok, I apologize but I feel like I need to say something here. I haven't been a member on this forum for a very long time. But for the most part, it seems to consist of a great deal of close nit friends and music lovers.

However, KFC, every post that have have read of yours is very negative and really disrupts the cohesiveness of this forum. You had the piece about one of the fiddlerman.com adds for the contest and then this. Quite frankly, I find it very offensive and rude almost like your just trying to stir the pot or something. I am not saying that I haven't agreed with some of your points. Although you don't have to like or agree to everything you read here on this forum, I don't think the way in which you word your posts sets a very good example to the younger members. Why always focus on the negative of things?

As for this donation, I think that it was great what FM and the other members who donated accomplished. I only wish that I could have gotten in on it sooner so that I could have helped.

You won't see many more posts from me in the future. I have mixed feelings about this website. On the one hand, there are some very short but useful violin tutorials, but then there are a lot of ads .I feel constantly bombarded either to buy new strings (there are brand names I didn't even know they existed, zyex, pro arte etc etc) carbon fiber bows, cecilio violins. It's compulsive. You know, the few times I saw fiddlerman on the chatbox, he holds a brief conversation and then he tries to sell them something. I was going to order from his shop but then when I saw the violin he sent to Dragon Lady, I felt so disappointed…Then I see this "donation". Why not make a donation to Dragon Lady? I think that more than a donation she deserves a refund.

I'm glad you agree with me. What I say is logical and evident. I have never ever seen a website dedicated to violin pedagogy with such an enphasis on consummerism. if you see "violinmasterclasses.com" for instance, there are a few little ads to help support the site, that you don't even notice. And then the transparency issue, violin contests and donations have a total lack of transparency.

As I didn't buy the violin I thought of buying a carbon fiber bow, fiddlerman's ads are very persuasive. However I saw those three defective warped bows that he's trying to sell anyway, instead of returning them to the manufacturer. I am young myself, it's a way of protecting myself. Violin is a difficult instrument and it's easy to fall into the trap of looking for external rewards.  I know there are poeple on this site much wiser than me who can handle this but I can't. Myguitarnow, gave me very good advice the other day. "focus on learning and ignore all the advertising". I have everything I need, I decent violin, a bow, and "just strings" all I need is some quiet. Bye and good luck

Ryan, don't worry about it. As you are doing, KFC is just sharing his thoughts.

We all have a fiddle thing in common here… And just listen to how FM plays, That's why I want to stick around.

As a donator, I was glad to help Huey and as a by-product, glad to help Fiddlerman connect with his students.
I am a follower of this web-site, because of the quality of the tutorials, the advice given by newbies and more experienced players, and other reasons.
There's a good mix of helpful advice and a fair amount of challenging discussion which whether positive or negative, invokes thought and questioning, which lets face it, is what helped to make the human race what it is today.
We are all able to make our own judgement, but it's always good to hear another side of the story, so that we can make a balanced judgement.

I embrace everyone's comments on this site whether I agree with them or not.

My one regret with some of the posts on this thread, if read, have the potential to embarass one of our nicest members, through no fault of her own, and I certainly hope it doesn't have that effect.

By all means express an opinion, but please consider the effect they may have on there members.

@KFC What makes you think my wife (DragonLady) is disappointed. We are happy with the violin. It doesn't bother me that the string and bow holder broke. Its a good lefty violin to learn on. I'm making use of the strings that came with it and will put new Red Label strings when I'm ready. Its all we can afford. Right now I can't practice because I have 2nd degree burn on my right hand.

Ouch! I didn't realise playing a leftie violin could be so dangerous! Next time, practice vibrato with the freezers door open!facepalm

Thanks Terry and Ryan. We had a grease fire in the kitchen Sunday night. My husband was going to fry Tilapia and the oil got too hot and caught on fire.

Wow, could have been a lot worse then. Grease fires can get real bad real quick. Glad you guys weren't hurt worse than that. the good thing is that 2nd degree burns, while they hurt real bad, seem to heal pretty quick and without much issue. It is a good thing it wasn't 3rd degree, could have had some scarring that made it more difficult to play due to a reduction in flexibility.

Did the fish burn?

Hope you guys are doing well and no damage to the house as well.  Take care of those burns.

Hi Fiddling Soldier, I'm sorry for your burn. Pelase read what I wrote more carefully! I never said Dragon Lady is disappointed. I said I was disappointed and not precisely for the string or bow holder, those are really minor details…I'm glad you're happy with that violin, I wouldn't. You see the difference? And from my point of view she deserves a refund. Dragon Lady posted a video on youtube of what she got when she ordered a violin from fiddlerman.com. I wrote that I was disappointed and if I had bought that violin, I would have returned it.

And I chose particularly that because I really like Dragon Lady, I like the way she plays, I do like the way she looks so serious and I have no right to tell her SHE SHOULD SMILE like other so very "lovely" here members have told her. I wouldn't even dare to criticize the face DL puts on when she plays. I think its her own style and I like her the way she is. If you don't understand this, it's not my problem. It's yours.

Enough.

Fiddlerman is a very good fiddler and a very good teacher too. It's the compulsive advertising and all the misunderstandings that make me tired. Like this one. And Terry, your comments are always so vague, it's like reading a haiku. I don't have time to analize your metaphores, I'm sorry.  I'm off to practicing. Goodbye all, I'll follow myguitarnow's advice.

@KFC My husband was just asking a question. He's not that great with punctuation. Sorry you feel that way. I don't see why you think I deserve a refund, there is no point  when we are happy with it. Yes, I do have my own way doing things but I don't mind people telling that I should smile more. I hear it almost everyday and I just ignore it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

LMAO, Terry.
