How heavy is your bow? Since you ordered one, I can pick a lighter one for you if you like. The ones that I sell are hand made and differ slightly in weight. I always test each and every bow before sending them out. More importantly than the total weight is the weight distribution. It is not good when a bow is a little top heavy or bottom heavy.

I'll get you one closer to 62 if you want Sam.

Naska, no problem. However, give another picture a test sometime and tell me if there are any problems uploading.

That sounds good, thanks. I don't really know what is right. Maybe he was talking rubbish, but he seemed to think 65.5 was more of a viola bow.

Doesn't sound like there is much in it to me.

FM - sure, I'll be happy to paste my comments on my CEVN into a review and wordsmith it a bit.

Regarding bow weight, what's the optimum?  I started wondering and decided to weigh mine.  It turns out that the one that came with my CEVN is actually the heaviest!  I'd no idea.

64.3g (the CEVN), then 61.2g, 57.1g and 51.7g

I'm actually not sure which I prefer because I'm not good enough to appreciate the differences.  Kind of like a beginning piano student appreciating a Steinway - it ain't gonna happen.  The CEVN one is about 1/2 inch longer than the others.  I'm actually quite surprised there such a big delta between them all.

Interesting stuff, delta eh do I detect some slight maths geekery? wink

The average bow weights are slightly over 60. I don't think that the weight is the big issue. I always go by feel. With light bows you need to work harder with your arm. If you draw the bow across the string with only the bows weight you will get a certain volume but the interesting thing will always be balance. Balance will keep the bow weight evenly distributed on a long stroke. They should balance somewhere around the bottom third but they probably all do that so it's more a matter of feel and technique. Some bows have a bottom or top heavy feel to them and they are not nice to play with. A good arch is nice too.

Looks like he should have removed the nut and planed the fingerboard then instead of raising the neck he should have lowered the bridge.

Just my opinion on it.

Thanks for the pictures.

You're welcome. Almost $100 facepalm. I know i'm an idiot and now i know that i can order in i-net a good violin... but then i was so scared about THAT violin was sold in the shop (and they are checking their instruments!!! LOL) so couldn't even dare to imagine that i can get any better for that money (that cr*p costed me $200+$100 luthier's work). Someday i'll buy a better one and give this Brahner to some kid to play, maybe that kid will burn it devil.. i hope..

I envy you :'( Congratulations! Practice 'til you bleeeeeed!!! Or not.. Sucks to have forced long breaks from playing.. Even worse than waiting for instruments to arrive.

In regards to the Stagg.. I got one. The pegs were useless, the bridge cracked and warped. The fingerboard was warped like )

The electronics inside were of poor quality. I opened it up and solidified some really bad soldering there. The bow was of course useless. And the rosin that came with it was cracked into pieces. This was a bow that was packed1 month prior to me getting it. The rosin and bow was expected. However the rest was meh. I reccomend trying it in the store before you eventually buy one. And make sure you get that precise one.

Needless to say I returned it and got a refund. Silly Stagg.. I would recommend Cecilio in place of Stagg. Just my honest, subjective opinion.

The only thing I can brag into the skies on the Stagg was the quality of the pickup. It was surprisingly good and accurate, which is always nice. Another thing I value about the Stagg is the format of the plugs. 6mm Jack. (1/4" if I am not mistaken) Where cecilio does not support that. So there could be some compability issues if you are recording without a dedicated amp. Because the more joints you have (Transformers, adapters etc) the more the signal is disturbed.

How was the intonation? You will enjoy it 10 times more if you get an effect box. Go into any music store that sells electric guitars and test some out. They are happy to let you do that. Bring some headphones with you. You'll have a blast. It makes all the difference in the world. From sewing machine to WOW WOW WEE WOW!!!!
