Hi guys - we developed a violin game
We need people to try it out and give us critique, so we can develop this unique game into an awesome violin practising experience :)

@Hman , how can that be egocentric if I want people, specially beginners, to learn how to read music? Of course there would be problems without a sheet music, that's the main goal of their game, intonation, sight reading, etc. and they also need this to be beginner friendly, from any ages, and also easily understandable, you wouln't want any trouble with the app and then trouble with the violin per se.

Oz, much love but you are missing the point. There needs to be multiple displays that teach the songs, not just sheet music. Granted the kiddie mode would be the easiest, it still doesn't address the "but where do I put my finger question". I personally would love a " guitar hero" mode for fingering training. I sight read pretty well and would feel pressured and rushed by the current format, I'm not sure that alone would be fun enough to stick with it.

Now that I've had some time to look at this I'd like to add my 2¢ worth.

I'm not really one for games, but I like this as a learning tool.

Personally I would not use a "finger position" mode - so if that was added I would hope I would have the option to turn that off.  For me using it would be to learn to read sheet music better, and quicker.

I like the fact that it shows next few notes - it helps to read ahead a bit.

May need a few tweaks  - as someone suggested, adding an intro, and explaining things like why you need control of my mic.  But all in all, I like it!

@Picklefish , I never said that there should only be a sheet music, adding additional learning stuff would be great, what I've been saying is that the sheet music should not be removed, because it's the one that teaches you to sight read.

cheers! - ⁰ℨ

This is pretty amazing program Lajer!  Thanks for making this despite the massive amount of work it must have taken.

Hi guys, I'm so glad that you've all taken time to reply, so I figured that I'll give your comments and questions some response.

@Hman : I'm happy with the thorough observations you've made, you really struck a nerve, or to put it in another way; you confirmed my expectations on accescibility for the game. Alot of people will, think that Magic Tune is too hard and intimidating, and alot of people will find, that it isn't challanging enough - we will try to satisfy both groups, with first priority on the newcommers :)

@ozmous  : Don't worry :) We will never ever abandon the notesheets, and I will, probably forever, have it as my personal opinion, that every musician should learn to read notes as soon as they can. We will, however, probably make a setting, for the users who cannot sightread. We will probably make something which makes you able to play even though you cannot read notes, but that doesn't mean that we won't promote and recommend the note-reading part :)
However, all of this is just speculations, I'm not the only creator of this game and we'll have a meeting based on your comments :)

@RosinedUp : No worries :) I do not consider myself a musician, because I don't feel worthy of bearing that brand yet. I don't feel like either a musician og a violinist, I feel like a person who plays violin and music, but I'm looking forward to the day where I feel good enough to call myself a violinist ;) I've heard alot of people say, that one never feel good enough, there is always improvement to be made - but that's another talk - but glad I could clarify that I actually do play violin and that I really enjoy it too :)

@Kevin M. . You should be able to play it on your computer - right now we only support computers using chrome - at some I really hope to make an app for tablets and phones, but everything takes time ;) Are you using Chrome and a computer with Windows Vista or newer? And have you checked that your microphone works?

@KindaScratchy : Don't worry, criticism is what I'm here for, both the positive and the negative. I like your suggestion "About this game" - we've spend all of our time developing, and trying to make it userfriendly. That, ofcourse, means that we haven't had much time to make the the more explainatory parts, we have limited ressources, but I see your point and I'll try to make it a priority. I think it will make new visitors feel safer and more "at home" if we write a description on why we do the things we do, and why it's neccesary to use the microphone. :)
Also, thanks for pointing out the typo, there will be typos, and more will probably come :/ English is not my native tongue, and our ressources are put into making a good game at the moment :) I'm glad you pointed the typo out though, that just means one less to worry about ;)

@DanielB : I'm aware that it's not the most exciting looking game in the world. Inside my head I keep seeing colorful and awesome actionpacked gamegraphics, but that's far out in the future, maybe, I'll find out that Magic Tune won't ever need those sorts of graphics, or maybe, one day, we'll actually be able to make amazing game graphics - which would be sooo fun to do. Either way, I see where you're comming from :) - but thanks for your positive and clarifying comment, as far as I can see you got it all right !

@Picklefish : I feel like, the response to what you've written, is actually already answered in the top of this message. I agree with what you're saying and I've talked about it before :) we actually messed around with some cool ways of showing what to play, and where to place fingers, without using notes. Personally I like notes best, but I'm a bad sight-reader, so I'm having my share of troubles when playing tbh ;) If we decide to make another way of playing, I'll keep you posted when we've released it !

@Ginnysg : Actually we do explain a bit of the game, if you take the guided tour - you can see it if you're loggin in, in the top right corner - but we could use a bit more "Behind the game" info - I agree with that ;) - thanks for your feedback!

@FinalPatriot : Thanks - It's taken 15 months so far, but I hope that this is only the beginning :)

Thank you all for your comments so far, I feel like I've learned alot from you guys!

Coincidentally, I just stumbled across this item about a video game that's controlled by a cello. Not exactly the same thing, but thought everyone who's interested in @Lajer 's game, might be interested in this one, too.

Hey Lajer I love this concept.  I've yet to actually try it with a violin, but I'll do that tomorrow while the neighbours are all at work!

I agree there's work to be done yet, and I'm sure you'll get it smooth, taking into account all the feedback people are kind enough to give you.

I'm a great fan of sheet music, and I'm at the stage of trying to perfect intonation, and I think this will be perfect for me.  I can see, though, that beginners especially may wish to switch between fingerings and sheet music to get started.  I'm with OZ here, budding musicians need to learn to speed read their sheet music if they're to progress beyond beginner stage.

I'll let you know if I find any glaring errors from a user's perspective.

Good on you for putting it out for us.

If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right.

Great idea though I don't have the time to try it right now I liked the video.
I hope to be able to check it out soon.
