Crappy video quality.  Youtube also cuts recording before I finish, I think.

Bad crunch some during 4 string -stops. I was also flat with the third/fourth fingers, esp for the thirds.  Still need to build up left hand finger strength.

Enjoy! :)

Any tips to reduce crunch with bowing during the 3,4-string notes?

Hey Fennecat.

How long have you been playing? Are you a violinist from the start of straight to viola?

"Crunch with bowing during the 3,4-string notes" I don't understand. Are you referring to 3 and 4 note chords? If so, you need to practice the round bowing technique to produce a quick, no pressure, pressure, no pressure attack. Let me know if this is what you are asking about.

The video seems to be recording vision at about 1 frame per two seconds while recording the sound track at a realistic speed.

I also do not understand about what is meant by the 3,4 string crunches, but guess you might mean double stops on the G & C strings (only because that is where I would most likely expect problems).

After looking at another of your Youtube recordings, which displays at a higher frame refresh rate, I learn that you had a viola until 2010, when you returned it - so possibly that was a hired/borrowed instrument.

I think it would help Pierre more to help you more if you attached the .jpg or .pdf file of Hoffman Opus 96 exercise to your next reply, and give a numbered reference to the bars in question. (Lower down the screen when you are typing a message you should find a button labeled "Attachments", click that to add a file from your computer.)

Are you in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore or elsewhere (answer optional, just curious). ?

I'm chinese, living in the states.

I began with the violin in 3rd grade, and switched over to viola during 12th grade.  I'm in college now, and I recently bought myself a new viola. The posted video was made about 1 week after the purchase. =B

Pierre, what do you mean by rounded bowing exercises?  I was commenting on how I didn't like how weak my triple- & quadra-stops sound.  I wanted a solid, crisp sound, but what came out was.... not that. =\

Terrible frame rate was caused by wifi.  It's rather distracting; I'll be weary of it next time I record.
