Typical bow services include:

  • Re-hair, using premium Mongolian and Siberian soloist quality bow hair
  • Choice of hair color, combination or solid
  • Stick re-cambering
  • New tip plates, using cattle bone and ivory
  • New silver, gold wire or imitation whale bone wrapping
  • New thumb leather grip, offering goat, lizard, stingray, or kangaroo skin
  • Frog and stick repairs
  • Cleaning, polishing, and lubrication of the eyelet

Buy a 1 and 1/4" diameter PVC pipe, cut to around 30 inches, stuff the ends and tape. Or if you like, order a pvc pipe from us to ship your bow. Ship your bow to us and we'll cover the shipping back to you after the repairs/service.

How much for just a rehair? I have three that need it.

Normally we charge $65 but please know that we use hair that cost $25 a hank from Dictum for example. We buy pounds and get it cheaper but it's an absolute top grade hair.
We could do the three for $150 and pay the shipping if you like.

Always wondered at what point is it more economical to rehair? If I use a $50 bow, probably not, if I use a $200 bow probably so. But is there a middle ground?

I guess it depends on how much one likes the bow that needs a rehair, and whether or not it could easily be replaced with one of equal sentiment. That $50 bow might be the perfect bow for me. If so, I would rehair it and play on.

Great points. I often tell people that they are better off buying a new FM Carbon Fiber bow than to repair them but by the same token, the Siberian/Mongolian hair that we use is primo.

I sent the three bows I have to the Fiddlershop. You should be getting them today. I'm super excited to finally get them rehaired, especially by someone I trust. Thank you for offering this service!

Thanks for trusting us FC :)
We did the work and shipped them this weekend. Unfortunately the two cheaper bows, especially one of them, had a one way hair-job done. The end of the hair was glued in with plastic, superglue, and silicone. The plastic slide was like permanently glued/melted in the frog so we broke it to work off all the pieces. We installed a real MOP slide in its place. I think the luthier worked like 5 hours on those 3 bows. LOL
Anyway, it's all done and on it's way to you. Hope you are happy with the re-hair. Since we shipped it 2 day, I suppose you will receive them tomorrow.
Of course we did not rosin your bows, not knowing what rosin you use so you'll have to dedicate some time to that. :)

You Rock!! Can't wait to get them. Sorry your luthier had to go through more trouble than first thought. I'll be happy to pay whatever extra charges would have normally been applied. Just let me know. I'm glad you told me about this because one of those bows was rehaired a little over three years ago by my local luthier who is now retired. Glad I sent them to you for a proper rehair! The other one came with a student outfit I bought not long after I started playing. Thank you for bringing this to my attention! Did I mention you rock?!!!?!!!

That explains why the one was easier than the other. :)
Of course we would never charge extra. In a case like this we either do it or contact you with some suggestions. Next time, the bows will be way easier to re-hair if a time comes that you would like to do that.

We are Kevin. We have a full time luthier here and he is especially proficient with bows. He worked in Germany full time with a bow maker. :)
