Hey there everyone. I'm looking to buy my first violin and fiddlershop.com is looking to be the place where I'll be doing that such thing. However, I have a question and I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to point me in the right direction.

I love the sound of Warren Ellis. I don't know if anyone knows who that is, but I find him to be the reason why I want to get into violin playing. He plays a very dark sounding violin along with a pickup and effects. Now. I was hoping to get either the Cecilio CVN-500 or the Kohr K500P. I would love to get the dark tone of the Erwin Otto, but I just can't afford the price of it. So my question. Is it possible to use a certain type of strings to achieve that tone with either the CVN-500 or the K500P? Any help would be greatly appreciated and I do thank you for any help.

I've listened to him and was......... Not all that impressed

BUT, if he has inspired you to take up the violin, more power to him.

You will find that it's not only the violin, it's the player as well.

I think that the violins offered by FM are good quality instruments and you could do a lot worse than buy one of his.

The violin is not an easy instrument to learn. You will have years ahead of you to become at the very least 'good'.

If you are ready for that commitment, go for it. If not......... ?

I hope you take the  challenge of learning the violin. You will never regret it

Seen it all. Done it all. Can't remember most of dunno ..... What was I saying???? facepalm

I know what you mean blindeellee and actually, the Barcus Berry bridge pick-up works great for that because it attaches to the G string side. I find that the sound that my fiddle produces is real dark and deep when using that pick-up. Also, you can use the equalizer on any amp or mixer to adjust the frequencies to get a darker or brighter sound.

I vote for the K-500 between the two. They are better adjusted by skilled American luthiers. Sound-post, bridge, pegs and the fingerboard planing are done at Howard Core. We have two or three still in stock after the Christmas rush. :-)

The strings that come with are the D'Addario Prelude (steel core) strings. To get a warmer sound you can replace with Dominant or Zyex.
