I'm 20 years old and though I may be new to the violin, I am by no means new to playing music.  I've been playing the piano since first grade and I played the flute in the school concert band for six years.  I love playing dramatic pieces and find immense joy in playing movie scores.

For a while now, I've been really interested in learning the violin.  My mom took lessons for a while but those stopped last winter when her violin teacher moved away.  She's a novice herself but agreed to get me started on the violin.  Unfortunately, I don't think I can get very far without a teacher and my internet search has led me here, for which I am grateful.

I know I'll probably never be a professional.  But I am content just to learn the instrument and play for my own enjoyment.  Music is one of my two greatest passions along with novel writing and I hope to make the violin an important part of my life.

welcome aboard. I think you'll be surprised at how far one can get on their "own". Truth is by joining this forum you arent on your own.  Lots of great info and knowledgeble folks to help you along the way.

In truth, paying a teacher you only have access to them once a week for 30 minutes at best.  we are here 24/7 to answer questions and help.  between these folks and other online resources Im completely self taught. but self taught is a bit misleading because I have learned from people online vs in person which has actually resulted in a better education as Im exposed to players from all over the world and all walks of life, and styles...try to get that from a local teacher   wink

You've found the right place my friend.  SO many people here to help motivate you, answer questions, and even make corrections on your playing.  I think that many of us consider the Fiddlerman himself to be our teacher, as he's very active at offering us all positive feedback whenever we take the time to post some of our work.  Side note, you should just tell your mom to get back in to it too.  She would enjoy this community as much as you are going to.

There is no failure, only results.

Welcome Ralash-Tanaf,

As others have said above, we are here to help. There are plenty of great videos from helpful teachers online and lot's of free sheet music above. If your mom helps you get started you should be well on your way.

Another great way to improve is to record videos of yourself and post them on our forum in the Critique Corner:
https://fiddlerman.com/forum/c.....ue-corner/
This is in a small way comparable to playing for people/teachers and asking for advice. You can then choose to accept the advice or not. :-)

Thanks for your intro. Hope to see you here a lot.

Welcome to the forum!  Its a great place to hang out and gather information.

Starting out at your age, with your music experience, who knows how far you could go!  The sky's the limit, or perhaps space, the final frontier! lol....

Ralash-Tanaf is the Vulcan word for music (literally 'sound-art).

Tar-tor ta - ma nash-veh mau-yan t'mihrsh-bosh ralash-tanaf na'lu nash-veh weh-rom ralash-tanafsu.  (Translation: "That said, I have plenty of fun music for when I am a better musician")  Tv scores and such, you know.
