Hello. I'm 27 and live in Tennessee. I've been checking the site out for a little bit, and decided to jump on in and join.

I've been playing the piano on and off since high school. I'm not that good, but I enjoy playing for family, my local church, and just for fun. But I always loved how the violin sounded, and decided to try and learn. So a couple of weeks ago, I bought a cheap violin at the local music store. I've been watching some of the tutorials here, and am starting to learn the fingering on the first position. At first, I got a little bit discouraged because, frankly, I sounded awful :) . After picking through a couple of songs, however scratchy they were, I'm more excited than I was before.

I'm not looking to become the best violin player ever; just enough to play for friends and family, and have fun with it. My main goal right now is to maybe be able to play a simple Christmas piece for my church this year.

The community here seems very nice and encouraging, and I hope to maybe contribute something on my journey. Thanks for listening.

Welcome Mushroom!  I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to play a Christmas song by Christmas. :D   A lot of people who come through here seem to have that goal in mind which is a perfectly acceptable goal to have.  But don't limit yourself to learning 1 song in the course of the next 10 months if you can help it.  My Opinion is to learn as much as you can as you go along and who knows by the time Christmas hits you may have a few songs to play instead of one.

Good luck on this Journey and Welcome!

Heya Mushroom and welcome aboard!  Glad you decided to sign up, the crew here are great with helping out with questions so take advantage of everything you can :) .  I have to agree with Vince, one song for Christmas is a great goal but why stop there.  If you set your goals high you'll fly along :) .  So much music out there and there's a ton of fun to be had with all of it.  Congrats on starting your journey!

Welcome Mushroom. Glad you decided to jump in. Your goal is very obtainable and you may even surprise yourself by doing far more than you planned. :-)

Look forward to reading your posts.
