Please have some music (lessons, scales, simple sheet music etc.,) printed while you wait for the violin.  You can even have shadow practicing.  I hope the waiting will be over soon.  Good luck.

I did exactly what suresh suggests while I waited for my first violin, but it came with in days..not weeks

Now this story takes a turn! However it's not a turn that ends up with me having a fiddle (not yet anyways) so I tell my wife, "Honey, I am going to just buy me a fiddle, one of the cheaper student outfits."

She says "No! You are not going to go buy a violin!"

I explain that the cost isn't much and that it's definitely affordable (we aren't swimming in money, but we aren't destitute either).

She still says "No, wait until you get the rental and see if you're going to like it."

Then it dawns on me, because she's never cared what instruments I play or have bought before.

She's getting me one for christmas.

Then it dawns on me again, christmas might be when I finally get to play!

In the meantime I am practicing on my guitar, learning more music theory and learning scales.

It's exciting when you know you're getting something nice and hard to wait but they say, "good things come to those who wait"... RIGHT???

I'd rather the waiting was over and I had the good thing if it's all the same.

Apparently it's not all the same, thus I cannot have my good thing... I just have to say that if the violin I'm renting is half as good as I've had to wait for it then this must be one tremendous instrument.

Knowing my luck it's probably just a standard student violin, nothing amazingly good nor amazingly terrible about it. I'm just really tired of waiting...

Awh Joe... Yes... I think if I were you, I would go crazy with the wait.  In the meantime I hope you can join a project or party thread and make the time go by faster faster faster!

I'm sure we could have shipped a violin to you many times over for this waiting period. Not really acceptable. :(
Sorry for your misfortunes.....

I was going to buy a violin from you guys but the wife got involved...

I already bought quite a few violin specific things from you guys and they've already arrived. As a luthier it isn't enough for me to play the violin, I have to learn how to set one up so I bought some tools, bridges and sound posts from you guys. I will one day build a few violins so it's all good practice. (I have my eye on one of your Master Fiddles btw)

However (key dramatic music), I finally got the call today! I was at work and couldn't go pick it up though, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow. After tomorrow it will be sweet, sweet practice until I can make a decent sound with it :D It's going to be really funny if it's a total flop of a fiddle!

Yeeeee Haaaaaaaa!!!
Happy to hear that it arrived. IMAO, it wouldn't be funny if the fiddle is a flop.
Here is hoping that it's a pearl. :)

It's a much better fiddle than I am a fiddler :D

I can now unequivocally state that I am not, nor have I ever been a violin prodigy. I sound pretty terrible!

On the occasion that I do sound okay the violin has a warm tone, although it sounds kind of scratchy or that's just my bad technique. I didn't get much sleep last night due to a storm here and only one today to practice. I'll just say I got my money's worth with a student violin. I think.

Time to practice!

well.. you know..the best thing is.... that  you will play good music.... I am excited for  you.  I don't envy your spot. I was there...and I too said  these things... but you know.. if I had to say the things that I should have done more of.. It would be long open bowing... I learned that from Daniel about 1.5 years into playing...  how beautiful open string bowing can be... and scales are nice.

To this day the only reason I didn't know play scales in the beginning as I did not know how to read to play them..I know ears are better..but my ears are not better so it was hard for me.

I didn't under stand the finger patterns... and well if you can get  your head around that you will be ahead of the game because then you can play the scales major or minor by the patterns.

I am just plain excited for you... and however  you go about learning... ear, music, online, however.. just enjoy it.. and don't make excuses or beat yourself up.

Make that violin ring and sing and be very happy doing it.

The second day I could eke out a few notes, that first day was awesomely terrible!

I'm working on Amazing Grace, because I love the song and sound of it played by violin, one day I'm hoping to do Faded Love. When I'm not making the occasional note, punctuated by bad noises, I practice bowing, the c major scale (with a tuner) and keep after my intonation.

I've also had two family members off-load ancient chinese violins on me, that aren't playable with bows needing restringing, so I've got some fun things to work on in the shop as well.

Hey there.. Thanks for that encouraging update.

It is cool that things are moving along.  I like Amazing Grace also. I  am not familiar with Faded Love but I know some here play it.

Very cool that you have project violins too!

Right on and good luck!
