Hi! My name is Matthew and I am 19. I've been learning the violin for around 6-7 years but was forced to quit when I entered college. I still hope to improve my playing, but it is difficult since I can only play on the weekends when I go home (I live in school dormitory with 0 sound proof walls). I am hoping to learn lots from all of you and "meet" you guys :)

Hi, m.k.!! Welcome to the forum! birthday_balloon

Is there no orchestras in college, you learn at? That could be a great practice for you =)

Thanks Mad_Wed!

Actually the college I attend does have an orchestra, but it is mainly for music majors. My lack of practice would bring down team anyway haha.

Hey Matthew,

Welcome to the forum. Barry's suggestion is a great alternative and also possibly a big rubber or steel practice mute. I use it from time to time when driving my family crazy.

Look forward to your future posts.

Yea I tried using mutes... but they dampened the sound of my violin in a way that I found unacceptable.

Fiddlerman's youtube review of the cecilio silent violin was how I got to know about this forum. I have a very low budget though and even then I'd have to save up. Perhaps I should ask members for some advice smile

The advantage of the silent electric is that you can hear it loud and clear in your ears while others can't. 1st-place

Welcome to the forum Matthew.  I hope you get your noise problems fixed.  On the other hand, if you don't like your neighbours the violin might be your best friend ...

I'm not sure where you live m.k. I just find a local park or something like that where people don't complain. You mentioned that you were forced to quit. Don't ever quit what you love!

I live in Vancouver, Canada... It rains like 80% of the time from fall to spring lol (ok maybe not 80%... but you get the idea). And no I never quit playing even if its just for a few minutes on weekends when I teach and play for my church's worship team, but I can no longer take lessons haha.

Haha.. Well despite the rainy weather, I still find Vancouver and Seattle to be some of the prettiest cities in the world (out of all the ones I've been to at least). And the temperature is just right during the summer smile

Oh I see. What you are saying BC, is that it is a fantastic area and we should ALL move there and encourage everyone we know to move there too. DONE. See you soon.
