Greetings from Denver, CO! I'm so excited to find such a positive community of music lovers!!
When friends ask me the difference between my fiddle and my violin, I tell them: Just Two Shots of Whiskey.
I'm on my third instrument, self-taught -- sawing away at an intermediate level. I play a fiddle named Earl (ebay with a little work from the luther) and proper violin, Pearl (Paesold, I'm not worthy of her -- yet).
I also play cello (classically trained as a wee babe, not in practice) and piano (classical, pop and jazz-kinda). I played guitar for awhile in college.
I stumbled upon Pierre's videos seeking specific techniques. His energy, enthusiasm, passion and love for music inspire me so much!!
A wee bit about moi: originally from North Carolina -- I come from a place where everybody sat on the porch and played and sang and grabbed whatever noise making thing they could find to jam along - and joined in. For me, music is essential.
I like to play this kind of stuff, in no particular order: jazz, old-timey, Bach, Cajun, Irish and some Scottish and a little Klezmer, pop tunes that strike my fancy.
Inspirations: Fiddlerman (of course!), Eileen Ivers, Itzhak Pearlman, Andy Statman, Kevin Burke, Steve Coleman, John Coltraine, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk
This community is just awesome, so many wonderful posts. If you see me breaking any Forum rules, I welcome a polite correction! Let me know if you need any snowboarding tips - I'm way, way better at that than the fiddle!
(As a side project, by training, I am a mathematician/computer programmer. I am working on an Artificial Intelligence that would work something like an Interactive Kahn Academy to make learning music available to children for free. Open source - like a Linux - with contributions from computing community, robotics community and musicians. Collaborative engine. Why??? Well, not only does music inspire hope and confidence, it promotes cognitive function and critical thinking. As I learn, I am paying particular attention to "How I learn" - so I can work that into early versions of the tool. This was inspired by my Father, who made sure I had music lessons because when he was a kid, he was too poor.)

Welcome tamlin!
It's amazing how many musicians trained on other instruments flock to violin! I'm a classically trained trumpet who made the "jump" earlier this year and I'm lovin' every minute of it! This site is full of characters from a all kinds of backgrounds and playing levels! Really, a great bunch of people!
I have to say, you made my day with your list of inspirations! In my younger days, people would always give me a weird look when I mentioned the likes of Coltraine or Ellington! I think I got the last laugh, though, with a well-rounded, diverse musical appreciation.......all while they're stuck, trying to keep up with the pop charts!
Here's to future great conversations about music, violin & life!

Hopefully you are building your AI cross-platform using something like Qt or wxWidgets. The only thing worse than Windows-only software is Linux-only software.
BTW I think I am going to ask FM if we can start a group of Linux users in this forum. I am detecting around ten potential members so far.

"like Linux" was just a reference to an example of a tool built using an open-source business model.
