Hi guys! I've recently picked up the violin. I played for a few years when I was a kid but became a teen and stopped taking orchestra in school...thought I had better things to do i guess (jerk!). I always loved violin/fiddle music & I've really regretted giving it up. I'd forgotten everything exept twinkle twinkle. I always wanted to learn again but never got around to it, I even bought a cheap violin off ebay & it sat for 2 years. I took the summer off this year  to hang out with the kids and started online lessons to help learn to read music again. I AM HOOKED!! It seems a little harder learning at 39 than it was in 6th grade but I'm coming along. I've found a few problems (mostly because there's so much to do at once when you play-fingers in the right place, bowing corectly, and learning the notes)...but I make sure I practice at least once a day, six days a week, so I'm sure with practice i'll work them out, the videos are a huge help too. Usually if I'm paying too much attention to fingering my bowing gets sloppy and screachy or I my fingers dont seem to want to go in the right spot when I'm concentrating on the bowing...I never thought I would love scales!

I practice with my daughter whos in her 2nd year of orchestra at school so we help each other alot, it's been fun. We're loving all the downloadable sheet music we've found and have figured out a few favorite songs even...it's jumping ahead, I know. I'm totally looking forward to being able to play well. I'm setting goals on at a time & I've found alot of help in the tips you all post and everyone is always encouraging... and the videos are just awesome!

Thanks alot guys!violin-1267

Nice to make your acquaintance, Shanda. Welcome! Judging by your "I AM HOOKED" pronouncement, you'll fit in well here. We're all addicted. :)

That's really nice that you're learning along with your daughter. It's fun when you learn a new skill with a friend or loved one and can compare notes and give each other advice. My husband is also learning to play the violin, so needless to say, it's a topic of conversation every night at dinner.

Keep us posted on your progress!
