I have been learning the staff and notes. On 10/9 I found out what them lines are called the staff. I have s book "essential elements 2000" and a staff manuscript notebook . My question is how much should I try to absorb. I understand FACE&EGBDF but should I work 2 notes at a time or all it seems when I pound GABC then review ABCD. OR EFGA, then go back to g string I draw a blank just going up and down the scale dosent seem ti work for me due to not needing to think or am I trying to learn to much at once?

You are probably trying to learn too many notes at once. It's like learning a language. Pick one string and play many combinations like what I have on my exercises here:

Hey Brent, I haven't seen you before (but I've been absent for a while), in any case, welcome.

FM's lessons are great; focusing on each string.  You might also check out some of the finger charts available that you can put onto your fingerboard (under your strings) which will help you identify the note and the correct (approximate) finger placement; and as FM said, just master one string at a time until you own it, then start on the next.  Learning something this new (and difficult) in "chunks" is soooooo much easier than trying to get your head around all of it.

I got tricked into learning to read music; wait, I got tricked into learning to read English as well (I thought Jane was hot, so I had to learn to read in order to find out just what Jane was doing with Dick amuse).  I started with the benefit of a teacher who first taught me the finger placement of each written note (I didn't know the significance of the note/symbol name at first), I just knew where to put my finger when I saw each note, and after a few weeks, come to find out, I was starting to read and play sheet music.

It's fun work Brent, good luck, have fun!
