You can use an old white cotton t-shirt to wipe of the strings. If you mean a sock like thing to cover your violin I think you are taking it way to far. You want to play your instrument and not worry so much how you preserve it. Just jam dude, an instrument is meant to be played not stored in a case.

My violins never make to the case.  They just sit there waiting for me.  I never know when I'll pick it up and start playing.  Well we can't really call it playing but I enjoy it.

Good Kevin,

That is an excellent way to play more often. It's actually one of my motivation tips. In Sweden I had a special hook for my violin and one for my bow. It really helps to have the instrument readily available.

I agree. I play a lot more now that my violins hang from my wall. Just pick up and play.

BTW About "have the instrument readily available."  Is it fine, to keep the instrument out of case? duncecap

Yes it is Mad, unless it would be exposed to something that could be damaging such as unusual weather, flying objects, continuous sunlight, too much moisture, etc. The cases main purpose is to protect the violin and especially during travel.

Fuf! Ok then. I just was told in music store, that i have to keep the violin "properly" - in case.. Now i can hang it somewhere on the wall =))  smile It' really annoying to get it out and put back 3-4 times a day. Thank you!

ps. i always find answers in non-relative to the topic conversations..amuse

A true story.

A general store owner out west also wanted to keep his violin handy.  He drove a nail into the wall and made a hole in the back of the violin to hang on the nail.  His customers however began to play the violin during their shopping trips.  The violin became known as the "store" violin.

So, there's a lot of historical precedence here wink

The bridge side of the violin must be too delicate !

Besides, the constant hanging of the violin caused a lot of the varnish to scrape off around the hole but becomes hidden when played.
