Find Second Position Easily on the Violin

Learn to easily find second position right away without having to search of it. The best way to learn to find a position is to have a guideline. Playing a position with your hand between the scroll and body of the instrument makes it difficult to insure you are right until you actually hear the notes and can readjust. Having a guideline will give you confidence even before playing your first note. Practice scales in second position to reinforce the feeling of being in the correct position.

Thanks for posting these ways to find the positions FM. I'm going to spend a couple weeks practicing from first to third position then hopefully move on to learn that whole fiddle neck ;-)

Sounds like a good plan. I think third position is a good choice for a place to start. Shifting from 1st to 3rd can offer a lot of flexibility when you want fingering patterns that make more sense.

Third position is one of the most useful positions. If you only learn one position after 1st it should be 3rd. MGN, a couple of weeks won't be enough, LOL.

Good luck, I know that you are a quick learner.

I know FM...:-) I just feel it is important to practice all positions right away even as a beginner so you don't get trapped in first position.devil-violin

I wanted to bump this topic forward to highlight this Fiddlerman Video on 2nd position, and to remind people of the many learning videos available. Remember the drop menu bar at the top.
