I have my very first competition coming up and I would like some tips and suggestions on preparing for it...

Advice would be very very much appreciated !

I've never been in a competition but if I did maybe I would follow the same procedures of my normal performances/concerts: Search and listen to several interpretations of the pieces I would play, practice, read some feedback, talk with my teacher and try to be calm.

Wish you luck derpyviolinist! :D

I made this post a while back which I think applies perfectly to your question:

@derpyviolinist

Welcome to the forum!  Good luck with your competition.

Practice...and know you stuff.   :)

If you can gather a few friends and family to do a "pre-competition" show that might help with nerves.

Very cool. Please tell us more. What went through your head when performing? Were you nervous? If so did you do anything special to counter that nervousness? Were you able to enjoy your performance? Do you have any advice for others?

Congratulations!

@Fiddlerman, I wasn't so nervous throughout the day but when it came to like ten minutes before it was my turn to play I did start getting very nervous, my hand was shaking and I kept on underestimating like "oh what if I mess up" or "what if I totally forgot my piece". I guess what made me stop being as nervous was seeing others perform. I knew most of them were a nervous wreck like me but they still played their piece and when they messed up they continued like it wasn't a big deal. When it was time for me to go up I was a bit nervous but right before I played my piece (it was Salut d'amour if you're wondering) I paused and took a deep breath which helped soo much. While playing the piece I did make a mistake or two and that made me wonder if the mistake was obvious...but the thing that went through my almost the whole time while playing is to stay calm because if I don't I'll definitely mess up. Aside from the nervousness I did very much enjoy my performance and I definitely recommend doing a competition for those who have never done one. Not only did enjoy it but I also improved my playing during period when I was practicing for it, I also realized the areas I needed to work on. I guess the advice I would give to others is to stay calm throughout, if you're not calm it can mess up your thinking and distract you from your playing and also HAVE FUN!done

That is exactly what I wanted to hear. :)
If you don't mind, I would love a blog about that... You can use what you posted here if you like. Mind you, only if you don't mind doing it. No pressure. :)
I want to start posting interesting blogs under our blog menu above.

That is a matter of opinion. Besides, I enjoyed reading it.
