Hey Everybody!

Sorry for being such a stranger the past couple of weeks, it been pretty rough dealing with doctors and getting ready to purchase our first house!

But don't worry, I still catch a peak here and still find time for playing my violin!  I just wanted to give everyone an update!

1.  Thanks to new Zyex strings and new Dark Rosin by D'Addario (Kaplan Artcraft), my issues with the light "howl" I was experiencing while playing really quiet are gone!  The cheap stuff I had before was very inconsistent and I'm happy that I changed!

2.  Excited that my new FM Carbon Fiber Bow came in! (I was also excited to see the "extra" FM pencil which now resides with my violin!) :D  I recently found out that the bow that came with my Palatino was, in fact, warped.  I began noticing that "bow bounce" was occuring more frequently, even while concentration on bow technique.  I finally had it checked out to see if the issue was me or the bow!  With the new CF bow, that "bounce" was virtually eliminated!  ....just have a little more technique to shore up now!

3.  Speaking of technique, my fingers are becoming more nimble as I practice!  I'm slowly working on a more natural sounding vibrato as opposed to the "forced" sound I'm getting now.  I think that primarily due to my "Finger Vibrato" technique.  My "Hand Vibrato" is coming along nicely as long as I don't tense up, same with the "Arm Vibrato."  Still a long ways to go though! :D

4.  While playing at Reenactments, I'm encountering more and more inspiring fiddlers!  It's amazing to see how many people are interested in playing but just don't know how to start!  I've sent them all here & to the Fiddlershop!  The biggest questions I get are about my strings and "Slipper" shoulder rest! (I'm getting the word out Fred & Pierre!)  Hopefully they start popping by!

Well, that seems to be all for now!  Don't worry everyone, 'ole EJ is still around!  And Pierre, I'm well past my 6 months now and I'm still here! ;-)  ......members were excited to see what/if I would be posting 6 months from my "Intro" topic when I first joined!

Just curious, do we have a list of easy Halloween songs to play for fiddle?  I'll be at a Halloween party and my friends are asking me to bring my fiddle!  I remember playing a creepy song called "Monster Melody" before jumping into our regular songs during high school. But I don't remember the real name of that song or some of the others. :-(

Would love to play some more songs by then!!

Thanks everyone!  I hope everyone is enjoying their fall!!

~EJ

Happy Halloween!!

Highly cool vid, EJ!

Glad to hear you're ok and all.

well there you go!

A good bow is as important or more so than a good violin.

Yeah, but what kind of rosin was on the bow?

I think we can hazard a guess that the strings were probably.. gut?

The old rosin was a cheap, amber colored type that wasn't very good.  When my carbon fiber bow arrived, I used my new, dark rosin before I played.

I also rerosined my old bow which solved some of the tonal problems when playing quietly.

I'm really starting to get the "personality" I like out of my violin! :D

Very glad that you are spreading the word.
We can actually start a list here or on a new forum.
The two pieces that I have on the home page to Fiddlerman.com are great.
You can get the music for "The Witches and the Pumpkins" on virtualsheetmusic.com
and "In the Hall of the Mountain King" on this site under sheetmusic.
https://fiddlerman.com/studies.....iddlerman/
then scroll down to the intermediate sheet music.

Found these on a search but getting the music is another problem. Maybe someone can help with that.

Wow, that's a huge list!  .....but an awesome one at that! LOL  I'll definitely have to find some of these tunes!!  I've also been working on the 2 songs posted in the homepage!

I think we should have sort of a holiday topic with music ideas, especially with all the holidays coming up!  Ya know I'm going to be here next month asking about Christmas songs as well! LOL

For Halloween, we can use the other topic I started the other day about easy Halloween songs!  I posted a really easy "monster medley" I learned back in high school!  Some people are taking an interest to it! :D

Here's the other forum topic:
