There has been a lot of discussion recently about E strings, but at the other end of the scale, I have a 'rasping' G string ( you can make your own jokes up!!)
Any idea what causes it, or more importantly, how to stop it?

I was born with nothing, and to my surprise I still have most of it left!

Of course you checked if there was any rosin accumulation? Try cleaning it with alcohol then check? How old is it, is it corroded by sweat? Have you made your monthly offering to the fiddle fairies?

Feels Clean enough, I just ran my finger nail down it. Prolly more on my D String ( after trying to record 'Pirate' part 5 about 30 times today!) seems to have more.

My guess is the Fiddle Fairies.
The string is about 2 months old and any spare alcohol gets drunk around her, not rubbed into anything!!
I'll try and grow a ring of mushrooms lol

G strings are supposed to growl (excluding really bad rosin excess).  Otherwise it is a matter of the sensitive and careful touch of the seasoned player to use the bow just right for an impressive bass sound.

I bet you didn't know that the G string could do all that ?

(One must also bow the string "squarely" but not too hard with a smoothly gliding bow.)

The slower you bow any string, you will get a rasping sound. Also, the G string vibrate's so much more than the other string's. Be sure you depress the string firmly down on the finger board and as Oliver said, bow squarely to the string.

I get the same sound if I have too much rosin on bow and strings, I wipe my strings just with a dry cloth while i'm playing, then later come's the alcohol wipe.

Here is a guess.

As you know, the lower the string tension the bigger the vibration. This is why we have more distance from the fingerboard on the lower strings. My guess is that your G-string is possibly touching the fingerboard.

remember Terry; It's called "The angels' share", not that the fiddle fairies don't hijack a load now and again. LOL (look it up on google)

I think you're just trying to play too softly, play it like you mean it and see if it stops. Just a thought.

All ideas above are right on… after all… we all have it happen one time or another huh?
