I am  almost a senior citizen, new to violin. I tried to take lessons at at a local music school but they could not put me in at a time that was convenient for me. So I bought an inexpensive violin and am learning online with your Fiddlerman videos on You Tube and with a few books purchased at a music store.
I am making progress since January 2011 !! I try to practice at least 15 minutes a day.The squeaking has become less.Laugh

Hi,

I am a senior senior citizen.

Scout around for what you can learn.  There is plenty available.

You will know you are doing the right thing if you are having fun.

Be patient.

Just remember, age is a state of mind and yes Old dogs can learn new tricks. I guess I'm an example as that I'm 77 and started to re-learn the violin/fiddle. I wish you well and just have fun.

Welcome, and day-by-day, may the squeaking ever lessen !

(my same feeling exactly - and it does !)

I have met quite a few fiddlers that have started playing the violin 60 and are able to play quite well. Usually what is lacking is the technique to play virtuostic pieces but the ability to learn to play seems to be very good even up in our years.
The most difficult obstacle is our stiffening body :-)
There are actually pluses to learning as an adult. Often we are not seeking a career anymore which leaves us with more dedicated time for a good hobby.
We are more mature and appreciate music in a different way. Maybe even more open to other genres.
We can take "hobbies" way more seriously. Perhaps our children, if we have any, are older and don't require so much attention. Grandchildren might need an "interest" which is often influenced by their surroundings (a learning grandparent for example).
Often we have the means to get a hold of good equipment.
I don't know about you guys, but I am much more structured as an adult. :)
The list probably goes on and on.
Anyone have pluses to add to this list????

Hello,

I played violin for 10 years in the past. My teacher was a classical musician, I played with music sheets all the time. Then for 17 years I stopped playing. Recently I joined an Irish music local band, and suddenly I'm trying to play Irish-fiddle style.

I'm really enjoying the adventure, but this is something new to me. I can play by the ear, without music sheets, but I have some problems when I try to enrich the main theme with double strings, etc. So I was browsing the net, looking for my life-rescue (I mean music sheets :) ) and I came across this forum.

Does any of you have Irish fiddle music sheets (Moly Malone, Irish Rover, etc, etc, etc) that can share with me?

Thank you so much :)

I'm 63. Here's how I handle it: I get up in the morning, look in the mirror and say, "You're young! You're young! You'll get used to that face!"

It encourages me that Fiddlerman speaks of older people being able to play.

Good luck learning to play!

Hello to you all! And thanks for the welcoming. I'll post a video of our band here soon... or at least when I manage to hear myself playing :)
