As I'm learning some fiddle tunes I find myself improvising as well as changing some of the songs I'm learning to something I think sounds better. I was wondering how many of you just enjoy improvising tunes as you learn?

Do you start to create your own songs? I've also recently began piecing together my own pieces for fun. They are probably pieces I've heard through the years but it's been an absolute blast. I find it's really helping me improve my playing as well as keeping my motivation high for practicing.

Any fun things you've found yourself doing as your learning that 'breaks away' from the traditional learning's or pieces?

While playing a tune I come to the end of a phrase and hold the last note. I then use that note and try to make different sounds, good, bad, weird, gruff, sweet. I sticks in my head better thinking that I might use the new found sound in the tune.

Oh thats an interesting way to do it @MrYikes! I'll have to give it a try. Thats also a way you can work into vibrato too i think!

If you can and have the feel for it, it's a great thing to do. Make the piece your own, make variations, add embellishments..... anything that will make it more interesting. This of course applies more to pieces that you play by yourself then orchestra or chamber music. Of course chamber music all depends on the mind set of your colleagues.....

I doubt I'll be playing chamber music at all but if i do I'll keep that in mind :D

It really is so much fun to make the piece your own. I've found it's oddly really helped my intonation in first position. I'm still barely learning 2nd and 3rd positions but as I begin to experiment with the other positions the improvising seems to make me relax more and not get so worried about messing up hahah. I guess it's kind of become a coping as well as learning mechanism for me lol.

Anything that helps our intonation has to be good. :)
