People with perfect pitch can also be a pain so be careful with your new skills dancing

PS   Those 2 organists are the only ones I've witnessed live and I can assure you that I am older than sand and would have noticed any others.

Two very funny lines!

I don't want perfect pitch, I would be happy with a "Spidey Sense Tingling" that tells me something is MAYBE a tad high or low.

Haha I've never come across someone with perfect pitch before but I've heard stories about how amazing they are and how people get them to do composition and theory homework because most people find that really hard.

I can't really tell if a note is slightly higher if I just play it alone, what you've gotta do is play or pluck your strings when you're tuning it and have the reference note playing in the background. Try that and maybe you'll start noticing the difference.

Also, if you're tuning a specific note and you're not sure if you've quite reached it yet, theres a phenomena in physics called beats where the difference in Hz can be counted and thus you can find out how far you are from your reference note.

For ""Spidey Sense Tingling" that tells me something is MAYBE a tad high or low" If you play your open strings in tune for long enough you mayyyy start noticing when they are out of tune. Sometimes this trips me up too but when I suspect something is off I like to check my fourth finger with the next string so see how similar they are and if it's way off I'll retune my violin again

I can kind of tell when things are not quite right while playing. And I am pretty sure I am in the correct finger positions. The piece I am playing does not seem to be harmonious (?) . I will then look at my tuning and find a string or two out of tune. As I am playing, I have no idea which strings are not right. Maybe in time.

I see you are from "Down Under". Have you bumped into Robyn fnq here on Fiddlerman.com? She is from near Melbourne I think. Far North Queensland. Very nice lady.

No I haven't had the pleasure of meeting her yet. Melbourne's a real city unlike Perth. We have about two rows of shops and that's our 'city'. I forgot to mention earlier but thank you all for the warm welcome laugh

devil-violinGood day to all, I also have started playing the violin again but it is 56 years since I previously played.  Joined a local Horizon Chamber Orch. that only takes people over 30 and want to start again or start the first time.  Two wks prior to starting I still had no violin --so--traveled to daughter's house and grabbed hers so I could start.  While watching the violin sales on e-bay I saw an "Song Maestro, baroque style(no corners on it) that no one was bidding on.  READY for this:  I won it for $10.50 USD .  The catch-- $58.00 for shipping from China, custom hangup in Chicago, $25.00.  Total $ 93.50  for a ten dollar bid.   Bad thoughts about the china quality were in my mnind so took it as soon as it arrived to a local luthier and had him go over all of it.  Then the shock came.  All areas checked were correct measurements.  The only thing we did was to treat the pegs to make sure they functioned correctly.  His statement was " this guy knows what he is doing"

We determined(luthier is a friend)that the strings were low quality so I put on Pirastro Tonicas and am still trying to play.  (no fault of violin)

All you young healthy people should not complain about having problems.  We older (anchient) people, like myself, have to put up with- two hearing aids, bifocal/trifocal glasses, muscles that don't remember.  Our vibrato has vibrated away, intonation is a forgotten word, etc, etc.  BUT  WE ARE HAVING FUN AGAIN.  It is almost an obsession now, I have two 1/8 violins, & one really bad shape Strad copy on my wall.  A  Jacobus Stainer copy being completely restored (was in the family) as it is over  100 yrs old.   another Strad copy from a garage sale ($30.00)that is being made playable. second Strad copy that is set Strad. up as a fiddle. Third Strad copy waiting to be made playable.

Remember we old timers on fixed income can't waste much of it.  I have paid less that $60.00 for all including frt. except the Song from china.  There will be more spent as they are brought to playing quality.

Don't give up on low cost for a violin,  shop till you drop and youwill be amazed at what you can get.    Never give up.

Just like learning again, it takes work and desire then more work but that is life.

Welcome to the site Grampa Ed :)

I didn't know what your Song Maestro looked like so I looked it up and found the Song Violin eBay store. He makes Vielles!!! I still can't afford one but the instruments in his store are beautiful!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Copy-o.....b693051d  This one made by Song is beautiful. It gives me even more incentive to learn how to play violin. Then maybe I can justify saving for one. Gads. He has pretty good prices too even with the sneaky customs charges.

If you feel comfortable enough I would love to hear your baroque violin sometime.  :) That's great you were able to find a chamber orchestra to play with too!

Best wishes

"Our vibrato has all vibrated away." roflol

On "Cheap eBay violins" … Just tell people they are like a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree.  With a little love, and some practice, they too can be made beautiful.

Thanks for the welcome everyone.

I have a problem you can help with, why or what did I do to cause my posts to come up twice. I thought I followed the procedure.  Obviously I am not a technology whiz.

Welcome Ed. I'm so glad you're having fun learning all over again. Glad your ebay purchase turned out well. I love to bargain shop too. About the double post, my guess is you clicked post new reply two times. No worries.
