this is a subject that I am having trouble with, I have always Been a lead violinist so background is not my strong suite I Could really use some advice. it's just me and a vocalist.

Like Amy Winehouse and Adele but with male vocals. I just don't know how to play background. I have never really had to except in orchestra but then we had sheet music.

Familiarize yourself with the key (scales) of whatever piece you'll be accompanying. Be aware of all the chords and arpeggios that belong to the keys. Know the progressions in that piece. You can analyze it or just hear it as you go.

Use double stops including the root of the chord. Experiment with rhythms and try to be percussive. If there are no drums you'll have to be the rhythm section.
