Be warned that if it's a VSO, the fingerboard is likely not actual ebony, but something else that has been painted and the repair will not be quite so simple as planing - the finish will also have to be replaced...

It was interesting to read all these posts as I have just went through my first string change!  I had a really dull D string right out of the package.

Having played bass guitar for many years, I decided to use an old string trick to see if it would help on violin.  Knowing it was a steel core string, I put it in boiling water for a few minutes.  It seemed to help (at least temporarily) bring back the brightness in the sound.  I'm not sure how this will affect violin strings as they are different from bass guitar strings.

Has anybody else heard of string boiling for violin?  I only tried this as an experiment with a cheap pair of strings.  I don't want to ruin a good pair when I finally get them! laugh

Thanks guys! I found a luthier 30 miles away, so I guess I am going to have to make a call or go see him. Too much needs to be done to this VSO. b-slapfacepalm

I for one have never heard of the boiling water thing. Very interesting. Wonder why this would improve anything at all. We know that most materials expand with heat...... Maybe the expansion and contraction do something for the tired metal.

I believe that all boiling did was remove dirt, dead skin and oils.  It helped brighten bass strings for a few weeks, but all it really did was buy extra time between string replacements.  .......which for a college student living off of Ramen Noodles and playing out at night; made life a little easier! LOL

As for my little experiment with my violin D string, the "brightness" only lasted only 30 minutes!  dunno  Actually, I think it just removed all the rosin that caked up on it and I only imagined it sounded better temporarily!  duncecap  I guess you live and learn! LOL
