Hi Guys,

I saw this on youtube recently. It a beautiful rendition of Les Miserables of I dream a dream. Then later on in the video he use the violin as mini Cello. Is it for show or is for real? Any thought on this.

Here the video :

You can hold it and play it that way but for the octave down sound, you'll have to do it on the computer or using an Octaver. For a live performance you would simply use a pickup with and Octaver/octavizer....

Here's my friend playing my fiddle as a cello.

Here's another example of playing the violin like a cello:

Well, obviously it's a stunt and trick but it's cool that some people can do it.

I have seen a cellist playing a violin, just for demo.

However, the high strings for violin is on the right side when you face someone holding it like a cello, whereas the high strings for cello is on the left side.

The girl in the second video did that Ashokan farewell using violin as cello, she is great, because not only she had only heard that song only once, but all the strings were in reverse order. The oriental guy also played it with the strings in reverse order.

The guy in "impossible duet" actually restrung the violin so the string go from low to high from left to right.

Just my observation, correct me if I am wrong.

Hi @pky,

Thought I'd chime in on your observation if I may.....lol

When holding the violin like a cello, the low strings would be on the players right just as they are on a cello.

In the Impossible Duet, he may have tuned it slightly different, but he's definitely hitting the highest violin notes on the left side. Easier to see him hit the A and E up high towards the end of the song.

That's exactly what I meant, "However, the high strings for violin is on the right side when you face someone holding it like a cello, whereas the high strings for cello is on the left side."
In the Impossible Duet, he may have tuned it slightly different, but he's definitely hitting the highest violin notes on the left side (his left, but our right). Easier to see him hit the A and E up high towards the end of the song.

smileAgain, that's exactly what I meant, too, his high strings are on the left side of his body but to the right when we face him.  If his violin is strung as a violin, then the high strings should be to the right of his body, to our left when we face him.

@Feathers:

Sorry, I think you are right! I didn't realize that cello's strings go from low to high from player's right to left! Thank you!

Thanks Feathers and pky ... I had a good little chuckle when reading these replies.  It took me a few minutes to actually visualise each scenario, and I couldn't do it.  I had to go get my violin and hold it like a cello ... LOL

Yes, you're right!!!

If you think you can, or you think you can't, you're probably right.

I suppose one could also use the octave strings like Ray does with his viola experiments.

It's all good! smile

I should of been more specific about the cello strings. At least it would have removed some of the confusion, sorry about that.

I think orchestra should have a few violinist perform the violin as a cello to give the whole classical thing a bit of a flair. I am not into classical music, they are nice, but not me. afro but if they make it interesting, then yes.
