OK, finally got away from the paint fumes and got this video posted. It was originally 40+ minutes long - I couldn't possibly subject anyone to THAT - so here is a redacted version of my first meeting with my new MZJ 905 fiddle and Holstein 2 star PB bow... there's a bit of general chat and a few short tunes... I could play that instrument forever ! I'm not using a shoulder-rest, and I'm kind of thinking in general to actually move away from using one altogether - although I could do with a cloth or thin pad to reduce the slipping on my shirt collar - we'll see. I feel quite happy without the rest... Anyway - here it is...

Ha !   Yes, she's becoming somewhat of a distraction from all the stuff I've promised to do here.....  next step is to make a set of bespoke shelving in what used to be a wardrobe in Debbie's study / workroom....   I would like to come up with some excuses mostly centered round "oh, the delay is due to delivery times / stock shortages / I need a new bit for the router / I'm out of PVA / I'm short of biscuit-joints" and so on... - BUT - unfortunately, she can always tell when I'm fibbing....  bunny-headbangbunny-headbangbunny-headbanggrrrrrr......treble-1226crotchet-1218violin

A Scotsman never Lies, they embellish.

Congrats on the Ming, it and you sound great together. And still like the sound of that empty room.

With violins there is no fretting over the music.

Thanks Don, @OldOgre - it doesn't QUITE play itself - but damn near it ....  I'm sure the Ming ( "Li-hwa" - "princess" ) will further my playing ambitions, no doubt about it.  I have learned so much using the FM Concert, I'm convinced this will be the next step...yaaaa_gif

I loved listening to you play! I will admit it seems like a match made in heaven for you! :D Isn't it amazing how much a "better" violin can make playing so much easier and so much more fun. It's like a dose of excitement and encouragement again!!! good luck coming up with excuses for playing the new one!!  Lord knows I wish I could take it to work to play my new one but I don't think the guys would appreciate my playing when i'm supposed to be working hahaha.  I can't wait to hear more with it!

LOL - thanks so much folks @RockingLR33 @damfino and @Fred - yes - I well know I "have my own style" which kind of deviates from the norm - because I just do this for fun and enjoyment.

You are sooooo right though Lindsey - I mentioned this elsewhere - 3 years back when I started I thought the FM Concert would last me forever - but I eventually felt "there was more to come" ( even with my half-hearted improvisational style ) - and already, after only a couple of days I feel I can just "go out there" and improvise/create new stuff ( like I happily do on guitar )...  it is just a "better" fiddle, no doubt.

Now - I have referred to this before - sure - it is "better" than my FiddlerMan Concert.  But, there is NOTHING wrong with the Concert, nothing at all - it is a GREAT starter-to-intermediate instrument and I would highly recommend it to any newcomer to the instrument who "has a feel for music" and knows they will get great pleasure from learning and playing.   I've only reached where I am in my own journey thanks to that instrument, and I eventually had the feeling that "there was more to come"

I am of course keeping the Concert ( Connie ), and she will be steel strung and re-tuned to one of the various "cross tuning" setups like DDAD - just one of the many CT variants - when I want to do crazy old-time fiddle tunes LOL...

What an awesome journey....  awesome... I love it, even in the dark days when everything I try goes to hell in a handcart...   roflol

The Ming is such a pleasure to play, isn't it? I notice it reacts more to the weather than my Concert does, some days it is loving the weather and just singing away, and other days it hates the weather just as much as I do and it wants to just be put away in its case until a nicer day, lol. It makes it seem like it has a personality, haha.

One of the many things I love about it, is how the notes, especially on the G string, vibrate into your shoulder, really makes you feel connected to what your playing. :) I forget if you mentioned that in your review? But I'm sure you've noticed it when you play :)

Congratulations on the new fiddle Billy it sounds great.

Thanks @Uzi !  I was in two minds about getting yet another instrument, but my 65th birthday is approaching, so I thought I'd treat myself (no one else will !)

This makes fiddle number 5, and as I mentioned to someone else, it'll make a "perfect 5th"  ( hmmmmm, lolol )

Thank you @Schaick and @CyndieZ

It has become a mutual symbiotic relationship - Li-hwa's voice will open up the more she is played, and I'll get better the more I play her !    Win-win situation...drummer

Was going to wait until I saw the video to respond, but that is going to be a long wait, so.....
I'm happy for you with your new sweetheart. Is it Lee or Lye? I want to say it right when I introduce her to my girls.

LOL @MrYikes  !  "Li"as in a very much shortened "Leeee".  "Hwa", as in hwaaaa".

Such pronunciation, is but my limited understanding from my first encounter with the pinyin representation of traditional Chinese characters....   :)  but I thought it ideal to name her "Princess" in Chinese.... LOL

Sorry for the late comment and thanks for sharing. I always thought that I was seeing all comments but recently discovered that some posts don't show up in my "View New Posts" admin bag.....

I'm thrilled to see the development and that you are pleased with your new instrument.

You even have VIBRATO going. :) Congrats!!!

As for no shoulder rest. I believe that you look very relaxed which is a great thing.

I would recommend that you try a rubber pad such as this one.
You might be able to find them in a make up department or store in your area. They are also used for makeup removal.
Best part with those pads is that it keeps the instrument from slipping....
