Thanks SaraO it has been an eventful day for sure. As for tuning I now have fine tuners on all strings and the luthier has tuned it for me so hopefully it will only be small corrections on the fine tuners and no more disasters!

Here is video number two, unfortunately I have had no time to practice tonight so I just made a quick video of me with the modified violin. New bridge, Dominant strings and the bit that holds the strings with the fine tuners in it, fitted! I have changed my violin hold to keep my shoulder relaxed and keep the neck of the violin down. Watching it I seem to be having trouble keeping the bow on the same part of the strings.

Round two fight! (sound on recording seems to have got out of sync…)

Your violin sounds much better and it's in-tune cheerleader

Sounds like you need more rosin on your bow.

Excellent I shall put some more rosin on it before my next attempt.

Great job with your right arm too and keeping the the violin lower. Look at your left hand even though you are playing the open strings. You want to keep it pretty straight with you left arm so you have a good reach for the strings when playing notes. You're on your way!

Good work on your posture already! Agree with MGN - hold your left hand straight. And don't forget your bow. It wants to be straight as much as you do =)

Good Job! dancing

Thanks for the comments peeps, just to make sure I have this right. I should be making sure my left hand is in line with my left forearm? As in my wrist should be straight?

I ordered my practice mute last night so I should have it tomorrow. Time is precious at home at the mo with wife and little one, so I have decided to get an hours practice at lunch every day. Fortunately I have a comms room I can go hide in and not bother anyone.

Yeap! That's right! See, you already know, what to do. Also, in case you want to get better with your posture, you can watch performances of different violinists. Look at them, how they hold the instrument, their hands and heads...

Good luck!

You should strive for that but no one is 100% straight. It's not the end of the world if you bend one way or another when necessary. Still, shoot for the stars and if you fail you might land on the moon.... However the saying goes.

Dam I was editing to try and get the video to display right and now it is gone :( I will try again.

Sorry FM any chance of a 'how to' post for this I forgot what you said in shoutbox, can get it to display no probs but it ignores my resize command. I could try and sus it out or I could play more violin violin-student :D

Thanks Mad :)

Also the sound appears to be nicknacked again I'll try and sort it before next time.

Here's a link so ya don't hear both on here and Youtube at the same:http://www.youtube.com/v/arOvz.....e=youtu.be

Where are you playing? Is that your house? Looks beautiful.

What are you recording with? I'm hearing a lot of delay and stuff on my Macbook.

Getting better.

Move the bow a little faster to avoid the scratchy sound. Keep your 3rd finger higher for the G on the D string. Keep the F# right up against the G but make sure it is high enough. Listen carefully.

Your strings have stretched and need to be raised a little. Don't be scared to tune it. Just check that the bridge is fairly straight first. The bridge won't break again.

You're leaping forward quickly.thumbs-up

Thanks myguitarnow that's very nice of you to say, it is indeed the corner of my conservatory. I am recording using the first free bit of software I could find which encodes straight to flv for youtube posting. It appears that it doesn't keep the sound synced at that quality level so I will revert to low quality while I sort out a proper solution. I am only using the built in cam and mic on my laptop as that is all I have.

Thanks FM I will start today's practice with another attempt at tuning, I'm sure I will be more successful this time.

I am having some finger flexibility issues at the moment so I think I will try and really work on scales and intonation today.

I have been bowing on the slow side to try and keep the volume down as the neighbours also have a young baby, but my practice mute should arrive today so hopefully I will be able to bow with a little more gusto laugh

Bowing is really starting to feel good now, I never got on with strumming a guitar but I knew somehow bowing was for me. I can't wait to get back to practising at lunch!

Not possible to start playing violin and have fingers that work perfectly for it right away. Takes some time. Keep up the motivation and work and you will be fine.

So today's problems are bouncing bow in the top third (have tried twisty hold technique) It doesn't always happen. Quite confused.

More importantly, terrible volume from fingered notes as opposed to open strings. I don't remember this being a problem before. Could it be because I had a mute on?

Oh and just generally terrible intonation, but I did managed to play a few notes I was happy with and I think I tuned the violin up right with out destroying anything laugh

Now want cheese, dam it!

I have some cheese right now. But i'm afraid i cant sent it to you - it's really yammy!! LOL!

Seriously, Don't be confused at anything you do right now. It's normal process of learning..

Can't say anything about the mute- don't have any..=/

That topic about bouncing:

Here is today's video, I think I have sorted out he sound and increased to recording quality a bit.

Watching it I am now less sure it was in tune, but it was a lot better lol!

If you are having a hard time tuning you should try an electronic Chromatic tuner.  They're really cheap and if you bring your violin into a music store I'm sure they would let you tune it up with one right there.  At least when it's in proper tune you will be more able to remember the sound of your violin and keep it in tune easier.

I think that s pretty good. The more confident you get the smoother the bowing.thumbs-up
