Playing "up the string" is one accepted way to increase volume without big bow pressure.  Also, the sound becomes more focused and is easier to hear (intonation).

Some famous virtuoso said that this was one key to his success.

The topic is called sounding point in case you did  not hear of that.

The FM sol poniticelli (sp?) video is a further example of how extreme bowing can be used.
