Been noodling around with this tune for the past week or so. It's a fun little tune, and I'll be happy when I get it a little cleaner sounding, but I'm happy with the progress I've made on it :)

Sounds nice! I really like the piece, it makes me want to dance to it XD

I have a question.... what microphone do you use and how do you edit your audio? It sounds so professional and I've been wanting to record myself like that....

@StaccatoDuo Thank you :) I use a Blue Snowball microphone, and record and edit using Garageband. The microphone is super sensitive, so I set it up across the room using an extension USB cord. I have no clue what I'm doing with my settings in Garageband, just make tweaks to keep it sounding pleasant to me.

Ah I see. I was using this software called Audacity but it doesn't work too well with violin sound in my opinion. I'll try garageband next time :)

Thanks, Toni :)  @coolpinkone

@StaccatoDuo For the most part I really like the combo of the Snowball mic and Garageband :)

Grrrrr......   There's no doubt it is a tricky little tune, but I felt what you did was not bad at all....   I rarely review my recordings until much later for all sorts of reasons - like - I know I have played it better before without the camera, there was an intonation issue, a timing issue, ornamentation issue, bowing issue - you name it.

I'm generally aware during my own recording that "something didn't quite come-together" and, although on occasion a single "take" works fine, there are many times I just leave the recorder running and do a couple, three..., several :) .... takes until I say to myself - "aye, that was OK!" - and edit out the earlier trash... LOL

Honestly, I wouldn't be so hard on yourself - you've come a long way - and there is a lot more to come !

Chin up violin_girlwill  without doubt beat devil-violin into submission....

I seriously recommend not copying my mistakes. D'oh - guntohead.JPG

Thanks, @BillyG :) I hate it when I start knit-picking my playing. I knew this video is just an example of where I'm at with the tune and my playing, so it wouldn't be perfect. I had at first felt like I was doing ok with it, timing is always my nemesis, can play along with the recording I was using to learn the feel of it (Mairead Nesbitt's version) but go off on my own and add a camera, and there goes all my work getting the timing and everything to work together. I figured, ah well, so what, it's where I'm at, and is what it is adding that camera into the mix, but apparently the timing was worse than even I thought, haha. Got a couple (well meaning, no ill intentions) messages (on the video and privately) about how noticeable my bad timing is, and it just made me feel like chucking it all in, haha. I was going to try recording it with a play-along track in my ear, but then I just look like a zombie, haha.

That sounds great Mandy. Thanks for posting. I had never heard that piece before. Keep up the great work!

Thanks, @Fiddlerman :) My teacher skipped over all the polkas when we went through the Complete Irish Fiddle Player book, so I wasn't familiar with it either, but I got to like it after I heard Mairead Nesbitt play it on her album, so I went back to revisit the polkas on my own.

@damfino I LOVED it! You play wonderfully! No reason to be disappointed at all! Remember, we are all our worst critics. Except, of course, the rare total narcissist that is sure he sounds wonderful and expects everyone to praise them no matter how awful they sound! You’re NOT that type of person and fortunately we don’t have anyone on this list like that!! We have one of the friendliest and most helpful forums I have ever seen! Leave the video! I recognise the song! I have heard it before!

All the notes may not be perfectly executed, but you have the shape and feel of the piece spot on imo. Very nice.

I loved it.  Fun piece and thanks for sharing.  It's so much harder when we put a camera on ourselves lol.

I think it sounded nice.  The only thing I would suggest is to make sure to get the feel of an Irish Polka.  I sensed you started swinging the rhythm a bit like a hornpipe.

Thanks :) I'll give a listen again to see where I do that. I play a lot of hornpipes, so I do tend to swing tunes without trying, haha. I do purposely add a little bit of a bounce to the notes of the A part, kind of lower and raise the volume slightly on the notes, just because it felt fun, haha, and then when listening to other people play it heard them doing something similar.

Hi Mandy -- Nice job on the Ballydesmond.

That's the first polka I came across when I started listening to Irish tunes. At the time, I had bought a tin whistle, and was searching for tin whistle videos on YouTube.  I like how you play this on violin.

You have nice control for playing at such a fast speed.  I think that's the challenge with fiddle tunes.  They tend to be in the easier keys (G or D), and are short pieces, but playing to speed takes a lot of effort.  Thanks for sharing.
