Ahaaaa  !!!  My apologies for the belated reply to you @Schaick and  - thanks for joining in as well @intrepidgirl  - good work !thumbs-upthumbs-upthumbs-up

With fiddle tunes, there often seem to be a few "slightly different versions" around - let-alone individual ornamentations and embellishments added, often unique to a player - and the curious thing is - the basic tune is still always identifiable.

Thanks for the posts, they're appreciated !

I seriously recommend not copying my mistakes. D'oh - guntohead.JPG

Please make your own, different mistakes, and help us all learn :-)

That is the beauty of bluegrass!  My goal at a jam is to open with what I played on my video and when it comes back around to me play that fancier version for a flourish of an ending!

Wonderful job all!!

Aha, I have signed up for Vi Wickam's fiddle tune a day and heard Soldier's Joy a while ago.  He also posts the detailed history of these tunes which is very interesting.  (and he is sure good!).

Giving this thread a bump to keep the party going for Bill.

I'm really enjoying hearing all the different versions. Seems like each person has a slightly different take on it.

@intrepidgirl Your version is the closest to the way I learned it.

The main differences seem to come in the B part. The way Intrepidgirl and I play it, the B part goes up, staying on the E and A strings. But the other versions go up, then down to the D or G strings (can't tell which just from watching...will have to experiment). I like the sound of the versions that go down, so I'm going to work on that.

I worked on Soldier's Joy a bit today and hopefully will be able to record and post a video soon.

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low,

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.
