OfflineMGN, I just used the strings that came with my cvn 500. At first I thought the A sounded weak, but now I think it is coming along. It probably has to do with how i play or my bowing skills -- I'm a brand new learner. I bet if the fiddlerman played with my violin he would have made it sounded a thousand times better.
I know this is an old post, but for recording at home, what I like to do is use a smaller Behringer board with an MXL990 mic, using the tape-out and an RCA to 1/8" cable into the camcorder or into my laptop. While the Sennheisers are good mics, for my money, they voice a little hot in the mid- and low-midrange. The MXL 990 is an inexpensive condenser mic with a FET preamp onboard. The Behringer I use (an older UB802) comes with built-in mic preamps. If you really want to get fancy, run a BBE Sonic Maximizer and at least a 2/3 octave EQ (mine's a dBx 215) in your send/return chain to really get some clarity involved in your recording.
Sorry so off-topic. Hope that helps.
Well thank's for posting on this thread artroland I was just going to look for this thread because I got a call from the office at my apartment that a UPS delivery was dropped off there while I was out yesterday. It was another Silver Creek violin from musiciansfriend. The first one they sent was used all beat up sratches broken strings. I got a return number for and didn't want a replacement. Well as I posted earlier they sent another with a somewhat warped neck. So returned that for my moneyback and now today I have my third Silver Creek and just might keep this one. It has a real nice tone to it and I put on a set on Dominants will try the built in pickup today. I don't like the looks of the finish on it but it sounds good to me.
artroland, I use a Presonus tube preamp with a Motu audio interface with built in mixer/EQ and the Sennheiser sounds great. I have heard wonderful things about the MXL 990 too. I think they are under $100 bucks aren't they? If so I just may get one.
I have the Behringer 802 as well. Those little mixers are great.
Seems there are a few us us now that have a lot of experience with home recording. Maybe it's time for Fiddlerman to add a new home recording section on this forum? Violins like to be recorded too
OfflineThank's Sara. It plays and sounds awesome. I'm keeping it. I plugged it into my Marshall acoustic combo amp and I was really blown away with the sound (Barcus Berry pickup with 1/4 inch jack on the left side of the violin
. Now I understand why a multi-million dollar guy that I got to witness playing one of these fiddles for a movie score. He said he used it for the movie Avatar and and the Titanic too.

I have used the Barcus Berry as well and was very happy with it.
Also, saw the MXL 990 for $50 on Google Product Seach. I think we may have one at home but am not sure. If it is the same mic I have to warn against noise. Could be my interface though. Will try to remember to check when I get back to Florida.
I've never had much of an issue with the MXL990 and noise. I made a little booth with some acoustic foam and it quiets a lot of the reflections that add ambient noise and hiss into the mic. Might be something to look into. I see you have hard floors, hard walls and higher ceilings, which reflect a great deal of sound.
I like the Presonus tube preamps. Even the little inexpensive ones, for the price, do an amazing job. I get around it with the preamp in the mic and at the board, and if I need to, I've found a boatload of free processing tools to warm up a signal. About a year ago I got on the kick of seeing exactly what kind of quality I could get from freebie effects processing and you'd be surprised.
Oh, and congrats on getting a Silver Creek you like. What about the finish don't you like? It appears kinda satin in that pic, and I think that's kinda cool. I know that one thing about buying from Musician's Friend/Guitar Center/Sam Ash, etc., is that the instruments NEVER come set up. And some require a luthier's touch to correct some of the issues that happen at the factory. Even my Fender Jazz had issues I had to correct that were obviously never addressed when the original owner purchased it.
The guy I bought it from never set it up, just pulled it out of the box and played it. Decided he didn't like the way it played or sounded, and sold it to me. I got it for $200 (it was a blem, and has a lot of dings). A setup, a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder pickups, and some cleanup of the wiring and it sounds amazing.
Here it is, BTW.
On the other hand, when it shows up cracked, warped and otherwise buggered up, there's not a lot you can do with that.
The Silver Creek does have a satin like finish. It's starting to grow on me.
You can never go wrong with a Fender Precision bass. I play a Gibson SG bass and love that. It has that old Cream sound. Don't even get me started on plug ins, I have them all. Izotope, Native Instruments just too many to list ;-0
I toured with a PBass in the past. Loved it, the thing was a tank. I switched to a jazz, though, because of what I was playing, I needed the versatility. I do have a Yamaha RBX300 with P configuration SD Quarter Pounders in it, and it gets me close enough to the traditional PBass sound. I've been eying some of the re-issue PBasses, though.
I've only ever played two Gibsons, one a mid-70s Grabber (huge growly bass sound) and the other a mid '80s Thunderbird, but the bass I started on was a 1964 Epiphone Newport, that was modeled on the EB-0 with that big humbucker.
Now I'm down to just my Fender, my Yamaha and a Steinberger. However, you can never have enough basses.
I agree with a previous poster. We need to have a section of the board open for recording.

I just ordered this exact violin from musicians friend and was slightly worried when I read your posts. I seems like you just have to ensure you don't get shipped garbage? Are you still happy with your choice to keep it? I don't play the violin so this will be my first (since my attempt as a child). I play the guitar and piano so I had no clue about buying a good violin. This seemed like a good deal and so far (until now) I had only seen good reviews.
Hi NoobViolin. Mine says Silver Creek Model SC3AB. I like it but you probably read my posts above that the first two I received were not good this one is though and it seems it keeps sounding better.
This is the one I got from Musiciansfriend.com and they won't have any in stock for another year or so:

You sure did get a different model than me. I also have a serial number and the luthier signature which my first two didn't have. They are made in Europe and not China. I believe your's is from Romania. Does it sound good? Mine says made in France.

Good luck with that. Where do you live? I've heard that kkmusicstores are pretty good about that kind of stuff. Many users here have had great experience with them. Unfortunately when you buy cheap instruments you have the "luck of the draw" element to worry about. I received 8 instruments from kk and have been impressed every time. A few of them have issues but mostly nothing I can't fix or get fixed relatively cheaply. The worse case problem for me has been a sound post that is too short and is therefor in the wrong position, too close to the f-hole.
