Inspired by the FM's poll:
If buying a violin for a beginning, intermediate, advance child violinist, what matters?
the sound (loudness vs tone quality and projection), history, appearance, price, quality and workmanship, brand (maker)?

New vs. used?

If buying a used/antique/vintage violin:
My questions:
Will well fixed cracks and/or open seams eventually affect the sound of the violin?

Crack's and open seam's will probably have an immediate affect on sound + the structural integrity of the instrument.

I don't think that the "well repaired cracks" will affect the sound negatively too much. I've played on old violins with properly repaired cracks and there is no indication that they have any drawbacks what so ever. It does however affect the price depending on where the repairs are located and how well they were done. Open seams are a regular part of a violins life. After resealing the open seams the violin is always back to normal.
