Well, it has been a week and still no word back from the music shop on the repairs of my new old bow. Not that am impatient or anything. I am just really looking forward to getting to practice on a violin that according to the shop is more suitable.sleep

Patience is a virtue. I wish I had more myself. roflol

Anyway, sometimes the wait makes it all worth while. Hope it turns out great.

Well I decided to touch base with the music shop and see if they had an update on the status of the repairs. I was told should be done in a couple days. I can't wait to see the difference. violinviolin_girl

Try to put more pressure on the bow but not too much, then try full bow strokes or add more bow instead. No beginner violinist will sound good for few months up to a year btw :)

cheers

PS use gut or synthetic core strings, coz almost all of new violins are comes w/ steel core, coz steel core strings are cheap and steel core can make your learning and playing harder.

Wahooooo!!! I got my new Old violin back from the shop this afternoon. Wow what a difference.

They even installed a new wood tail piece w/ micros' and Chin rest that look Awesome.birthday_balloon

Now for the important part. Does it sound better?  Oh Yes cheerleaderMuch smoother sounding, the best way I can describe it would be to compare a cheap bottle of scotch to a well aged bottle. It just sounds so much smoother then my Cermona ( If that makes any sense ) Especially the A and E strings.

Now for the questions: They put new medium Dominant strings on it and I read about the strings settling in, but I am not sure what that means and what I need to be aware of?

I feel like I just improved my playing two fold in one afternoon.dancing

New strings will mainly stretch and require tuning for a few days but the sound won't change much.  If it is good as you say then it should just stay that way.  Dominants do not have radical tension specs that might otherwise affect the violin.

The strings will sound better within a few days. When they are fully played in and stretched they sound smoother. I like my Dominants best after about 2-3 days. The Zyex strings break-in almost immediately but I think they were optimal the next day.
I'm really happy that I discovered them.

@CG     Did you try bringing up your MP3 with the ATTACHMENT option OR by using a media icon ?  I find the ATTACHMENT to be much easier.

It occurs to me that violin strings change dramatically in the first day(s) or so.  They become coated with rosin.  If I give my strings an alcohol wipe it will require at least a few hours to get back to optimum sound almost as if they were new all over again.

I used the attachment option. I realize though that when it is done uploading I need to select the stop option and then it works. I think the first time I just did attach and then posted. Were you able to see it on the second post? I am going to go out tomorrow and see about getting a cheap video camera. I can't find my Webcam I got with a laptop like 4 years ago and never used, and even if I could, I don't think I could find the software for it.

I think I really need to be able to post a video to be able to get some real feedback, but it will be a while before I do. I am going to spend the next few weeks just working on the Dexterity Exercise FM has to try and work more on my intonation. It will be hard for me, as I get bored rather easily. But I am going to force myself to do this right.

I have also been watching sales flyers for camcorders and I am flooded with opportunities and little knowledge.  However, I can already record using my MacPro and Quicktime and something else happened.  I had imagined making videos to post but then I realized how well I can use videos to evaluate my playing right here, i.e. having the same views that only a teacher has !  This already has helped a lot to fine tune my bowing.  I never could look in mirrors.

However, I still might consider a camcorder with the prices as low as they are  now.

PS Why would you not prefer a camcorder rather that a Webcam.  Isn't the camcorder more of a stand alone package ?   My Mac has a built in camera but I usually wind up perching it in some awkward position for the angle I want ?

Violin practice is difficult in the beginning but gets worse later on.

I am going to look at both Options: A camcorder and Webcam and see what prices and quality are. I got hit pretty hard with the repairs to my violin and must not have been very good this past year, as Santa did not bring me any extra spending cash or toys.

I am trying to weigh the pro's and con's to both options.

With a webcam, The cam can mount right to the top of the monitor and will always be there and I can see on the monitor what I am recording and it records right to my PC with no need to do uploads.

Camcorder is more mobile, but will also need to invest in a stand, can't see as well, if at all, what I am recording and will have to upload eveything I record.

You can use a camcorder as a webcam but it's tough to take a laptop and webcam to events.

Indeed.  You reminded me that last summer I saw a buddy with some small cylinder in his hand and it turned out to be some super camcorder.  And I can't believe how prices have fallen over the years.
