Jauniba, just followup regarding your original concern about Mendini slipping pegs, take a look at my Nov 3 post in this thread https://fiddlerman.com/forum/t.....st-violin/. I just checked and yes its a Mendini. While I expect every violin is bound to end up different in this price range, slipping pegs were my #1 issue. I'd have to tune every 10 mins if I was lucky. After minor DIY rework (fine sandpaper & chalk) it would usually last a practice session but would require retuning each day (this on an instrument that sat at home used solely by an adult – i.e., no vibration or shock from being hauled on a school bus, etc). It met my unique needs (just playing along at the same time as my child while she was initially learning) but if slipping pegs are your worst nightmare, and if its representative of the product in general, then I wouldn't go there!

Juaniba,

cecilio's violins for sizes 1/4 and smaller only have 1 fine tuner. I had to purchase a set (from ebay) to replace the only one. If you are going to put a set in, start from the E string; i didn't and ended up have to take of A and E strings because the only fine tuner that came with the violin is pretty wide.

The pegs on our violins were good and do not slip.

Thanks to PKY I just went and measured Eva's arm and it seems she really needs a 1/4. Which is a shame, because a nice 1/8 just went on ebay (used, which I like - means someone else was able to play it) for $35 including shipping.

But her neck-palm measurement is 18 inches, and she ain't getting any smaller!

Time flies so fast. LOL

Today 1/4, tomorrow 4/4, electric violin, rock band and late night gigs....
I'll spare you the other things that you probably don't want to think about just yet.

Jauniba,

Don't worry, there will be more on ebay. how about these two?

p.s., can she use her brother's? May be Lukas needs a 1/2 size now:P

I ended up buying the 1/8 for $35 used. It'll last her for maybe six months, and then hopefully I'll slap it on eBay and sell it. Or maybe in 2 months. In any case, I don't stand much to lose. It has two bows and 4 fine tuners.

Lukas is already on a 1/2 size. I should have bought the 1/4 when he was smaller but we were renting for $7 a month, which is tough to beat. His 1/2 is really nice - got it on Craigslist for $30. It was originally purchased from a local music store. It has a pretty nice sound.

Wow! What a deal! I have never had any luck finding cheap violins on craig list or the music stores. Congratulations on both violins you got for your children!

I read through all the posts on this thread and couldn't get past thinking, "Wow! How tiny IS a 1/8th violin?"  dunno

Then I started thinking, "Just how simple-minded am I that I can't get past the 1/8th violin??" facepalm lol...

I can't get past a 1/32 violin.  I have been tempted to buy one just to see how small they are.  There has to be better things to occupy my mind with but I just can't get that out of my mind.

I have one.

It looks like a Christmas Tree ornament. I have a picture of Eva holding it when she was two. It was a real piece of VSO, let me tell you. I don't know if you'll be able to open this or not.

Wow...She is so cute and that VSO so small.  In no time you'll be saying where is that cute little girl I remember, when she's grown up and giving her first concert. It does my heart good to see a parentwho loves their children as you obviously do and is bringing them up to enjoy music.

Aww thank you!

Seriously, I don't think you can even imagine how small that violin is. It's like the size of my hand. Eva was so little there that she was still calling it a bio-win.

I don't think I can post this. I can't remember what 8+5 is. Seriously. 13 or 12? Help.

LOL, soon you won't have to. I love that picture you have on FaceBook. Actually looks like she knows what she is doing. Super cute.

Yes, I am excellent at getting pictures that make it look convincingly like my kids really know what they are doing. But you've heard the videos. You know the truth.violin-student

Look at this one. This one would be the cover of Lukas' CD if he were like an amazingly talented child violinist. Cracks me up.

I don't know how to do that. I can barely handle the elementary math at the end.
