Great pictures, @Donald ! I like your stories also. Quite the trip for the traveler. My mother was from Horsens, and she has two brothers, one in Roskilde and the other in Arhus. Will you be hitting any of those towns?

@intrepidgirl

There are more pictures but they are on an incompletely exposed roll of 35mm film and have not been processed yet. I hope these pictures were exposed correctly. If so, they should show that the violin has recently been to Rødvig, Køge, Copenhagen, Fredericia, Padborg, the Danmark-German border, Flensburg, Hamburg, Bremen, & Oldenburg.

The travelling violin (Rejseviolinet in Danish) has not been to Horsens nor Århus, but it went through Roskilde twice, the first time through Roskilde was non-stop, and for the second time through Roskilde I do not know whether it stopped in Roskilde or not (I could have been asleep at the time).

Wow, excellent @Donald . It is really seeing Europe! Ah the days of 35 mm. I look forward to seeing pics, I have to find my old fashioned patience. I will have a shot of Gammeldansk while I wait.

As of [November 14] the violin is in Sydney (Australia).

On [November 12] it was in Amsterdam (Holland) for a couple of hours.

On [November 13] it was in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates) for a couple of hours, where it was photographed with a kind of camel.

I think the roll of film with various photographs as yet unseen will be processed today or tomorrow (I kind of hope the exposure of the film was adequate)

Nice to see it was in the UAE, even if only briefly. When I was growing up there (late 80s and early 90s) there may not even have been a single violin in the country.

Today, I understand there are amateur orchestras in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, both founded within the last 5 years.

Since I last had a roll of 35mm film processed (in about 2014 ?) the system at the department store here has changed, and instead of processing instore overnight they send it out to a lab - which I am told takes 2 weeks there and back.

I think the department store does not even sell 35mm cartridges of raw film any more...

I can understand why there would be no violins in the UAE (basically a desert) decades ago.

Fiddlerman traveling Chinese violin meets Italian viola in Australia.

The next series of pictures show what can happen after two "Handle with Care - Fragile" labels are added to a parcel and the baggage handlers get their hands on it.

This metal biscuit tin went into the box as new, but came out 12 000 miles later somewhat the worse for wear. The violin was not in the cardboard box during the trip, it was instead in the passenger cabins of the planes concerned.

Some of the baggage handlers are frustrated would-be automotive repair persons and panel beaters. They have special SWAT squads within each airport armed with rubber hammers and wooden mallets who are tasked with beating up parcels marked "Fragile" to test them for the presence of internally concealed anti-tank mines.

It's a very dangerous line of work for them to be in, and their life expectancy is much lower than that of the average airport baggage handler. These people sacrifice their lives protecting the rest of us from hidden threats.

The moral of this story is to try not to let musical instruments out of your control and direct observation when travelling.

@KindaScratchy Whatever box it was in when it got to me was shot, so I replaced it. I don't know if it ended up in another new box once it reached Fiddlershop.

roflol  I found this to be true when I ordered my new violin as well.  After those crazy unsatisfied workers are done with package, they hand it over to people that need 3 days to do a serious inspection- moving the bridge, playing with the bow with dirty fingers- in the guise of looking for drugs.... or something--- and told me that the box was taking an unexpected tour of the country (of Belize)-- AND THEY DIDN'T TAKE A SINGLE PICTURE !

I swear- someday I will be playing as well as my imagination
