Our family has had a violin that has been passed down for many generations and somewhere along the way, the story behind it was lost. I was hoping some experienced violinists/collectors might know some information about it. Here is what is on the faded sticker on the inside:
Johann Martin Hofmann
Hochfürstl: Hof- Laut-
und Geigenmacher in
Any information on this violin would be greatly appreciated! I have been looking online and have had a hard time finding anything, and what I have found is in German.
HOFMANN, Johann Martin Worked circa. 1798-1814 Schillingsfurst, Bavaria Germany. Flat personal model with red-brown varnish and fine materials. Johann Martin Hofmann / Hochfürstl: Hof- Laut- / und Geigenmacher in / Schillingsfürst 1805
One of 1805 vintage was auctioned in 1990 for about 1700 pounds.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. ~Herm Albright
