The most important aspect of holding a violin correctly is comfort. Be sure to find the chin-rest and shoulder pad that suits you. We are all built differently and must therefor find the equipment suited to ourselves. Try to balance your violin on your shoulder as much as possible to avoid having to grip it too hard with your chin. Having to grip your instrument the wrong way will cause tension and can create long-term complications and is very hard to change after years of hard work and practice. Take the time in the beginning to find the ideal position and equipment.
