I am going to kick myself.  I have been practicing without the click track.  I will start this week.  I told myself NEVER to do that again.  Anyway.  I  hope I can put it together soon .... This week.   :)

Good luck everyone.. Happy Happy Christmas!!!

I played through the song, all the parts, last night, and I think I'll give this a try.  Fiddlerman, I wasn't sure what you meant, if I can play Violin 1 do you prefer that, or do you need the other parts more?  Or should I submit more than one?

The only place that messed me up was that one 6/8 measure just before the end. I'm not saying I'm a great player, but I know the song once I heard it, so I mainly have to work on getting the bowing right.

I'm going to upgrade my 2009 iMac to ElCapitan soon, so I hope that doesn't mess up anything, I have never tried recording myself playing.  Are there instructions here for how to do that?

I'm struggling with following the bowing marks on this one. :(

If I can get it going reasonably well in time to record it I will, but otherwise might have to wait for the next one.

Hey FM, I just wanted to say thank you for compiling these little songs all together like this. :D I remember the first one I found was Bile Em Cabbage Down (saw the YT video and that's what brought me to your site initially, freaking LOVE playing that song!), and have always hoped to get in on one of these projects. I'm really digging this tune (part 1's kicking my tooshie, haven't looked at the other bits yet unfortunately) and am thrilled to (if all goes well) be part of this.

Now to just figure out how to videotape myself as I have neither a camcorder or a webcam, maybe on the iPhone? I'll figure it out, I've got two weeks! ;)

Please don't worry about the bowing. The timing and intonation is more important. I can easily live with free bowing. :)

It's not just following the bowing as written though, it's avoiding running out of bow on those long notes! lol

Just change the direction of the bow on the long notes if you can't achieve it any other way. When you change the bow direction on the long notes, try to do it as smoothly as possible.

I practiced this with the click track for the first time last night. To my surprise my timing isn't as much off as I thought it would be.

I do have an issue with sounding quite tinny though and I don't think I'm using enough bow, since I'm not experiencing any issues with the bowing and I'm certainly not that good of a player to not have issues.

I hope I can make it this time.christmascandle christmaswreath  only 1 week to go ...clock

Today's practice has been all with the click track and, holy crap, it's so much tougher when you have other music distracting you! I have this thing memorized, I can do it almost flawlessly in practice (well, as "flawless" as a beginner ever gets LOL) but the minute I hear the chorus I go all wonky. :P I'm not too worried, just gotta get used to hearing the rest of the orchestra, I suppose it'll come eventually.

One week left. EEK! ;)

christmascandleSeason's Greetings all - I've just come back from an overseas work trip (during which I couldn't practice cry) so I'm somewhat relieved to hear that I might not be the only one finding the hideous sounds I'm making more awful than joyful!

If I may ask a rather basic bowing question... in bar (or do you say 'measure' in America?) 37 of violin parts 3-5, am I correct in thinking both notes are up-bows? (That's how it seems if I start on a down bow at the start and continue with a basic down-up pattern). And if so, should I play up for half the bow, slightly pause and then play up for the second half of the bow, OR play up, remove the bow and start again to play up once more?

(I hope that makes sense...!)

Lovely. I was just reminded that I totally ignored ALL bowing notes from the sheet music.

That makes me feel a bit better @ladyeclectic - I really feel like I don't know what I'm doing on this >_< But it has been fun to play around with!

I guess as @Fiddlerman says, the timing and intonation aren't as important (lol, I don't think I have either of those down pat!!) - I was really just asking out of curiosity, as I've really only just started learning to read music this year.laugh

How is everyone doing on the project.  I am still "sucking" at this one.. I mean I play it ok...but I am not feeling it.  I hope Sunday is my day to record and send.   :)

@coolpinkone  I still suck at it too, I'm ok-ish with the bowing now, but I still sound like I'm bowing on a banjobanjo-1207 (no offense), and it still doesn't quite match the timing with the click track. And then there is the 'piece-of-electronic-staring-at me-while-trying-to-play-something-perfect factor to deal with....   not so sure anymore that I'll meet the deadline...clockembarassedfrown

I'm with AnnyJ, while I've got the part down for the most part (aside from borking up the bowing as written), I'm having a tough time making it sound good. I just did it three times with the click track and was happy to keep up, but boy does my bowing need work. Scratchy, squeaky and rather irksome - some of that I think is because of the new Dominant A string (lordy, those things have an annoying break in period!) but most of it is me. Which, of course is depressing.

At least it's a little better after the rehair I just did. But, whoo, nothing like a deadline to realize just how much further I have to go before getting "good".

I think I'm coming along OK, though I probably don't have the correct bowing exactly right. For better or worse, I'm going to record on Sunday.

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low,

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.
