Arrr me ol' sea dogs, ye devil-curs o' the deep - I've just found me an interestin' bit o' electric-folk - it's kind of (some obvious, some a bit more obscure) sea-shanty related - some of the songs are "new" (in the sense of not being umpteen years old) but - I hear many of them as being well based on traditional sea / and or sailing songs - and - it's all by Steeleye Span and the great Maddy Prior - full album link - you like it or don't - no prob - I love it !

... enjoy ( apparently it wasn't a greatly appreciated album here - well - not at the time ) - but I well recall two or three tracks - Sails of Silver, Senior Service, Gone to America yup - brings back a lot of memories... and good music to boot) [ LMAO @"The Senior Service Satisfy" - you had to be around when tobacco advertising was still allowed to get the meaning and word play.... ]
Find a free hour, stick the ol 'phones on, crack open a beer, enjoy !

Got a wee bit further with New York Girls... with a bit of a backing track... still getting used to the timings.... hopefully it'll sound more like this ( and a lot better eventually )... Didn't know where best to post this - it's just practice and a bit of a laugh - didn't want to start a new threadArrrrr Jim lad, now that be me new fiddle, matey, had to mute it though at the time of recording...
Cap'n Ferret: "Practice away on them thar shanties me hearties, 'less ye all be a-feelin' the cat-o-nine-tails across yer backs"
Deck hands: "Aye, cap'n " [ sotto voce "an' yer a dirty ol' bilge rat!" ]
Cap'n Ferret: "I'll just pretend I didn't hear that you mutinous curs....!"
@BillyG Fine work, laddie! Finer still with a lass and some booty, I reckon!

....Hmmmmm, some booty? I probably don't really know what that means. LOL
...LMAO - @Fiddlerman - thanks - I love every second of the journey as you can probably tell... and @Barry - frankly I didn't like to say anything .... about New York Girls and booty in the same sentence... and yes Pierre, it's in hand - just ordered a cheapo pirate kit from good ol' Amazon.... and thanks @Panda-P !
Glad you had as much fun listening as I did practicing .... it'll get better...

Captain Ferret here.
Well I be thinkin that I'd better get this 'Party' going 'officially' before that scurvy bilge rat Bill goes and has a 'premature performance'.
Myself, I'll be doin at least two two tunes. One that I already be knowin and one new one.
I hope others have been thinkin of doin a shanty for the party.
John here.
Sounds good. And thanks for your support in this little project. This sort of 'project' is not only a bit of fun, they help us to improve our playing.
And that is what this website is all about when you get down to it. It's about 'playing' the violin. So let's do it
Seen it all. Done it all. Can't remember most of ..... What was I saying????

Uh huh... some things simply make me question myself - should I just stop now, and give up trying to play?
Just kidding - it inspires me even more...

I absolutely LOVE Steeleye Span!!!!!!
I was into the whole Medieval Festival, Dungeons and Dragons thing in high school and sang in an a cappella madrigal group. One of my other geek friends turned me on to them. I love Saucy Sailor from Below the Salt album.
As to a sea shanty - Drunken Sailor is quite easy. My life is too crazy to even attempt the big group project this time, but I might see if I can squawk out Drunken Sailor by the 19th.
Arggghhhh..... Grab yer saucy wenches and fiddles
