I tried it out once and couldn't tell the difference concerning sound.
Found the following information online:

All basic parameters that determine sound quality, such as 24-bit/96 kHz A/D/A conversion and ZOOM original DSP chip ZFX-3 with 32-bit processing for effect algorithms are the same as in the G2/G2.1u. However, effect module configuration, number of effect parameters, effect parameter setting range and other aspects are different. The G1/G1X also does not have a dedicated line recording modeling algorithm.

Have ZOOM G1N.

I certainly have not tweaked all the bells and whistles but it sure is fun and I expect a few settings to actually be useful.  I think it is well worth the $50 but I also remember the day when this much technology was not available at any cost.

I think I really need a new forum name now  dancing

I was thinking about Oliver or Extraterrestrial.  They don't seem quite up to my new status as owner of a new psychedelic ZOOM box.  (Besides that, I didn't even get any incense with the unit!)

My only real complaint is that the manufacturer is delivering a box that is very much at a "machine" level.  I had 7 segment displays in the 60's which were a pain back then but it is much easier to display things like "AU" than to have an alpha numeric display and circuitry for perhaps "TREMOLO".  So, there is nothing intuitive about the use of the box and that causes endless flipping around the index.

I would only rate the box around a "4" on the user friendly scale.  My wife however is claiming that my new violin sounds have driven off the Japanese beetles.  Win some, lose some.

Fiddlerman ..... you said you tried G1N and could not distinguish between sounds.  Was that with patches or just dialing in effects by hand ?

If patches, where did you get them?

dunno

Pre-programed patches since I was at the store trying different alternatives. I feel as though the G2 is pretty easy to program yourself once you figure it all out.

Well, I did figure it out and I have a couple of "different" violins in memory.  I think the memory set-up is terrible and I would love to have a thumb drive port or some other permanent memory arrangement.  Given a volatile memory, I will definitely screw it up.
I had to doodle with a lot of parameters to get the sounds I wanted but really not a big deal after all.
Glad I got it and I think it is well worth the money  devil

Actually having to doodle with it as you say, is the best way to learn how to form the effects. I believe that these pre-programed sounds are meant more for the guitar than violin. We can be more creative if we start from scratch and mix it ourselves.drooling

Glad you like it.cheerleader

IF there are enough members playing with the ZOOM G1 or G2 I think it would be neat if we could post favorite settings at some point with a description of how they sound.  Even with the few early settings that I have I can already begin to identify the kind of music that would be a fit. coffee2

Great idea. I'll get on that next time I have my Zoom and electric violin out.

Yes, I think you are right that the ZOOM box would sound a lot better on guitar but I have still managed to store about 6 or 7 patches I think I can use.

There are probably dozens of ways I could yet play with parameters but I'm running out of patience and losing a lot of practice time.

Found out there is a ZOOM ACOUSTIC.  Did you have a chance to play that?

I didn't know, have to test it. Keep track of your patches and we'll start a collection of good effects for electric violinclap

Getting the best effects is a never ending pursuit . Don't waste too much practice time over it. Maybe set aside a given amount of time after your practice session specified for that reason. devil

I have found an unusual setting.  My e-violin now can sound like an ordinary fiddle and, sound like a better fiddle than my other two acoustics !  This is really valuable to me in the rehab from my classical past.  I had been thinking of buying a genuine fiddle but I won't now.

The patch setting is only using the equalizer.  My guitar amp has a 4 knob equalizer but never achieved the same sound(?)  The ZOOM eq feels more like a fine tuner with less brute force.

I'm not sure that the ZOOM is able to simulate an acoustic.  That could be tricky because the Aquila is not entirely solid body and winds up with a surprisingly strong bass cavity.  In fact, the Aquila can sound like a viola without any effects.
