This is a little outside the fiddle/violin realm, but not too far. Just had to share...my husband gave me an early Christmas present: a mandolin! I've been wanting to take up the mandolin ever since I learned that the tuning was the same as a fiddle, making it sort of a cross between a fiddle and a guitar, which I also play. I figured that it would be a fairly smooth transition.

I can, in fact, already play all the tunes that I can play on the fiddle, but I have a long way to go on technique. So, I'll be working on that while I'm working on my fiddling. I'm hoping that it will actually help with my fiddle playing.

Here are a few photos of my new mando. It's a really beautiful instrument.

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low,

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.

Sweet looking instrument, KS!

StoneDog is right. You'll have to do a virtual Diane trio for us. :-)

Oh beautiful.  I especially love the gorgeous inlay.  Have fun.

Opportunity is often missed because it wears suspenders and looks like hard work.

Thanks everyone. I'm really enjoying getting to know my new mandolin, which I've named Amanda Lynn (get it?). :)

The inlay work is lovely and I think the style and workmanship in an F-style mando is so cool.

Yes, I think that I won't be able to resist doing a three-part video...as soon as I'm proficient enough on the mando.

When the work's all done and the sun's settin' low,

I pull out my fiddle and I rosin up the bow.

Oh my word, that is beautiful! Look at that scroll!* drooling And I love her name. Your Silent Night trio was great, so bring on more videos please!

*It's probably not called a scroll on mandolins/guitars etc... but I don't know the right term... blink

Thanks, Alma. You're not far off. Some mandolins do have a part called a scroll, but it's not the same part as on a violin.

The top part of a mandolin above the neck where the tuning pegs/gears are is called the headstock, same as on a guitar. But an F style mandolin, which mine is, has a curly part of the body, which is called the scroll.

I plan to do more trio videos, especially after I get better. :)

@KindaScratchy:  Sorry for my belated compliment on your new mandolin. I saw this post earlier on, and then lost track of it.

Anyway, that's a beautiful instrument! And what a nice gift for you too.smile

And I love that you named it "Amanda Lynn".....lol!  It's perfect thumbs-up
