As an experiment, flex your first and third finger forward toward the palm.  You will note that the digits angle inward to a meeting point under the second finger.  Years ago, someone at the Selmer Paris woodwind shop made the same observation and created the Radial trumpet.  The signature feature of this trumpet is that the outward valves are angled to follow the natural stroke of the fingers.  This trumpet never sold well and is no longer made.
