Hi folks - for those of you active on the text-chat - over the last couple of weeks there have been quite a number of posts, always from "guests" saying nothing but posting a file. So far, this file always shows as a zero-bytes ( 0.00KB ) file.
I see no reason for this continued attempt to post files and saying nothing, as an attempt at hacking either the chat or peoples computers if the file is downloaded. I suppose another reason is just some dork being annoying.......
I *have* been ultra-careful and downloaded the zero-byte file - and it is indeed empty - so I have no idea what these people are up to yet.
However - I strongly suggest that you NEVER open or download an attached file in the chat-app unless you know who posted it, and why it was posted ( like it was posted by a member you are currently chatting with - AND you're expecting the file - that's perfectly fine - otherwise IGNORE them)

My first thought is that they're not 0 byte files originally. Something in the Wordpress software might be suppressing them. If we have a backend expert, that'd be something to ask them about.
I think it's far more likely they're trying to put out something we'd regret opening than 0 byte files. (Especially if it's many of them.)

Hia @charles - I completely agree - I did a test and tried to attach an executable file with ".exe" extension - and it was - as I expected - denied. It is as you suggest more likely that it originally was NOT a zero byte file - and WP has stepped in. Interestingly, I messed with a couple of other file types (and subsequently deleted the posts) ( VB source code .bas file, MuseScore .mscz file and a few others and all were fine.)

Good work Billy. While it may be true that it's kids, don't assume that script kiddies are not able to do some serious damage if they succeed in uploading malicious code. Billy's advice is a good concerning how to deal with files of unknown origin (or even known origin).
Files on the Internet are just like snakes, if you're not positive what it is, don't touch it.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. ~Herm Albright

I heard the "gurgle" and tabbed back - the chat was visible - and there was a message from Pierre - I typed "hey hey" - but it didn't appear in the chat window.... logged out, back in, and it's not there at all now....
I suspect Pierre is still working on it....
That all happened - oh about 5 mins back from the posted time of this message

I tested it out in IE and it is still buggy there, could post but not read, lol, so it is hit and miss for sure. And right now it's making my pages load slow in chrome. I guess it's having a bad day.
