Yes - @damfino  - I've observed "slow" responses to entered messages before they appear in the chat window - seen this from time to time - maybe 20 to 30 seconds - but - my 512k broadband could be a contributor to this ( especially when a Windows or virus update is stealing all my usable bandwidth !  Grrr.... )

But this time - it was like minutes - and my post didn;t come up

Unlike you - no - I haven't bothered trying other browsers - I'm on Chrome, on Windows (10 as it happens) and although I have IE, Edge, Opera, Firefox amongst other development browsers I just couldn't find the will to bother trying... LOLOL

Wooo - as I type - I got the gurgle....

@BillyG lol, I was bored at work, so I went ahead and tried the other browser for the heck of it laugh Otherwise at home I only have one browser.

But yay, it does seem back to normal :)  cheerleader

So I am not the only one here that dabbles in the geek side of things.   ;)

I am not into programming, with PHP and some simple JavaScript now and then, being about as far as I care to go. It would take too much time to go much deeper, and as it is, PHP and JavaScript take too much time for my preferences, It is just that I do find those useful, or see their potential to be useful, for my web sites.

I have written PHP pages, but I decided against going live with them. I am not ready to deal with the constant security risks that would bring. It is one thing to use PHP forum software, that other people write updates for, and writing my own pages, and having to keep up with security issues for those pages on my own.

As for the Chat feature of this board, I am not much into that. I used to chat on mIRC way back in the day, and then with various messengers over the years since, but I do not chat much anymore.

I am more of an open board kinda guy, or PM for one on one conversations.

Indeed @MACJR - the "geek side" LOL...   aye, I'm afraid so...

Yeah - I sort of agree with you about the FiddlerChat.   I usually just mark myself as invisible, and disable the "gurgle" sound.   The FiddlerMan site is my browser home-page, and it is generally loaded any time I have the browser open ( hahaha - and that's like 12 hours a day ! ) but I usually have other tabs open and I'm not watching either the site or the chat.   On occasion I'll tab back, or it just re-appears as I close down other browser tabs.

Usually my only reason for engaging in the chat is either to discuss on-going things with folks I happen to know well, or try, in my own way, to help guests who are beginners and asking for assistance.    Oh yes - having the appropriate permissions - I'll also take a minute or so just to check the chat content for anything inappropriate and delete such entries - that's pretty rare but it does happen...   The thing that does annoy me about chat in general compared to actual posts like this, is that it is transient - and once gone or scrolled off the screen it's almost impossible to go back to find something that had piqued your interest.

Yeah - over the years I've created a number of web-sites for local B&B businesses - I avoid virtually all 3rd-party scripts or services and usually cast any protection needed from the ground-up, using Perl on the server and some JScript within the HTML.  It may be "old-school" but that way, it's "clean" and totally under my control.

Proud to be a geek !   lumpy-2134

The chat engine is powered by a secondary server. I would much rather have the chat engine installed on our own server but I have yet to find a good one. I have experimented with various chat and shout boxes and removed them in the end. I'll bring the subject up with the simple:press team and see if they have any ideas. I believe it would be a great addition to their forum plugin.

I am good with HTML and CSS, those are my strongest skills that come closest to the programming arena. PHP, I have studied a bit, and written some pages with, but I do not know enough to feel comfortable using it on a live web site yet.

I am far more the designer than the programmer. I can make the HTML and CSS do all kinds of interesting things, but programming is a level deeper than I care to go, for the most part.

And yes, like you, @BillyG, I use multiple web browsers with mass numbers of tabs open in most of them. I use different browsers for different things, like one genealogy research, one for social sites like fascistbook (facebook), another browser for web design (Firefox all the way on that one), and Chrome for shopping and research. Yeah, and I know how much Google track users. It is annoying, but I put up with it. It seems we live in an age where the snoops are more than just numerous, they are also in charge. Oh well.

I have been keeping this site open in a Chrome tab since joining, and since Chrome is often open all day on my main PC, that means this board is bubbling away most of the day too. ;)

Turning off the sound for the chat feature does not work for me. It is not a big deal. The bubbles remind me of fish tanks, I used to have a bunch of those when I was younger. I still miss having a bunch of fish swimming about.

As for Chat software, I have never worked with any of those. I have used a few different types of PHP forum software, hosted at one or another of my own sites, but I never looked into using chat for them.

I noticed that you have a hands on relationship with this board. I respect that.

It takes a lot of time and work to run a board. Not many people know just what all is involved with doing something like this. The headaches and the rewards of it all. And I am not even talking about members... that is a whole nother can of worms and bouquet of daisies.

Then you get someone like me, a bit difficult to understand sometimes, but at least not a troll (although that could be a matter of opinion).

Ken.

I believe it stopped working with the latest WP Ken.

If you find me one that is better, no one would be happier than I. We spend money on it as well. It costs us $20 a month to have it.

Also, what exactly do you not like about it? Maybe we can make changes.

OK - @Fiddlerman -recent ( today ) experience - here;s a "trace" of a chat with Mandy - half of the stuff I posted is "missing" - but Mandy, and a guest, saw it.  I was able to chat to the guest and to Mandy in PM about it - and that seemed to work - and THEY saw my posts in the main chat...   I'm not the only one to have "posts disappear" - even without changing forum pages -

Used to be fine

damfino
yeah, it was sometime last week it started doing this. I saw a bunch of kids posting gibberish and random swearing post one day, deleted a bunch of posts, and each time I came back more old ones would reappear. It was a little annoying trying to clean up the chat when I couldn't see all their nonsense, haha
3 minutes ago

BillyG (me)
Yes - I caught some of that maybe around the same time - I just deleted it as well

<<< and that last post wasn't there when I did a page-refresh in the browser...

----  OK ----  I appreciate this doesn't help - but it does exhibit the ( or some of the ) issues people are currently having....    It is quite possible that actual guests  (i.e. NOT "members who are not logged-in" - of which I'm sure we have a fair number ) don;t see their posts either and "give it up as being pointless"

Well, the short test we had tonite with you @Fiddlerman, @coolpinkone @damfino and @gruff seemed largely to be OK...   fingers crossed....

There is certainly some issue with the current chatwee chat thing - I mean we "members" are aware of the issues and are prepared to deal with it - guests may not - and just "give up" and go...  ( when there is always the possibility of talking them into the insanity that is the FiddlerMan forum - I mean - I do that in their best interests - they may not know it at the time of course ! )

Heck, I'm just baaaaad !   dancinbunny

There are many settings on the new chat as well. I will tweek it. For example, I can choose to have the log in be strictly a WordPress single log-in. At this point you can choose between 5 options.
Guest
Sign in with a Guest name.
Chatroll
Sign in with a Chatroll account.
Facebook
Sign in with a Facebook account.
Twitter
Sign in with a Twitter account.
Single Sign-On (WordPress, Joomla, etc.)

I can choose who can delete messages and who cannot. Perhaps it should just be the admins who can do it. What do you guys think?

I would leave deletions to admins only.

Although having said that, is there an option that allows a (non admin) user to just delete their OWN message (but no-one else's) by any chance ?

Agreed that only admins should be able to delete.

Is logging in with WordPress a current option, or one that is available for you to add? I don't see it on mine, and is why I ask. I created a Chatroll account so I don't have to link my facebook or twitter to it.

But so far I like the new chat :) Reminds me of the simple and clean layout of an old AIM chat box.
