My first fiddle, a FM Apprentice, arrived yesterday! We were having friends over for dinner, and I'm the family cook, so I had to put off getting acquainted until today. This morning, I finally got a chance to find my way around a real fiddle, and learned the very basics: how to tune, how to rosin the bow, how to hold the fiddle and the bow, and got my shoulder rest figured out and set up. Then I practiced bowing one string at a time (the fiddle sounds great!), though I kept bouncing the bow, and I began to learn some finger positions by playing pizzicato. I'm really going to have to work at stretching my poor pinkie-- it just doesn't want to point in the right direction. Anyway, I had loads of fun.

Congrats!   thumbs-up

and so begin's the journey... stray cats will no longer be a problem...household pets if any shall come to respect you as a God that can send them into fits at the mere waving of your bow. You'll be able to soon empty a room by just picking up your fiddle. You will wonder if you have too much rosin on your bow and then think no, maybe not enough, then know yes, it was too much as a dust cloud engulfs you. Soon your mind will run wild and you may well end up like many of us...carving bridges, tweaking this and that, shoulder rest, no shoulder rest...chin rest exchanges , is my bow crooked??  but soon, you'll settle into what works and begin to make music...and thats just your first month...lol.

How exciting.  Have fun.

Opportunity is often missed because it wears suspenders and looks like hard work.

LOL. I'll settle for being able to out-screech my wife's guineafowl.

Hey Mike,

Welcome to the forum. I'm glad you like the Apprentice.
I know the feeling of having to wait to do something you are real anxious to do but you probably were right to wait till the guests left. LOL
Did you kind of push them out the door? ROFL
Bow bouncing is kind of super common in the beginning and we'll help you deal with that later if you can't work it out.
I know professional violinists that can't keep their left-hand pinkies from pointing straight up as well, so don't feel bad :) It's great that you are just starting and already aware of it.

FUN is what it is all about, so I'd say that you are on the right track :-)))))
