I admit I've dragged my 'Better Half' along with me (in the past) on my various 'journeys of discovery' so that we can always 'talk shop' - and he's been a real sport about it, fit right in & even appeared to enjoy it!
The fiddle has been a little different story - unfortunately, I used to feel his eyes glaze over when I started talking anything about my playing the fiddle, so figured I'd be lucky to capture the grandkids' attention - even if by osmosis. (lol)
Kevin took a few piano lessons as a kid, enjoys listening to different kinds of music & gets excited finding vintage 'treasure' (musical instruments in need of repair) - but that was about it.
Today, I heard him watching something with parts of "Für Elise" & Kevin shouted to me he was watching about how people don't play the 'original', but he likes it - then I heard 'Olaf', something about taking apart a cheap violin & finding 'plywood' in it! Lot's of times I can't always hear what he might be watching on the TV in the living room, but every once in a while something unexpected catches my attention!
So here I am, 4 years into this obsession, and there's been quite a few of these 'sparks of interest' during them - hard telling where it will go, but I'm confident Kevin would enjoy the company of all my fiddle friends and anything music I get involved with from here on. 🥰
...and oh yes, he's NEVER ONCE COMPLAINED ABOUT MY PRACTICING - of course it works both ways, also being involved with his passions! 💖💖💖
Have YOU unexpectedly influenced your loved ones

I think learning any instrument is more about self than others. I mean at some point if a person gets good enough, or maybe overcomes some adversity that is inspiring it can be a thing that is an influence. Listen to someone that has mastered music at some level and if it inspires you to want to play like that then i think that falls into the influence category.
Id say for me its opened up relationships with others that share that same interests. As a couple weve attended events outside of classes or sessions with a couple of classmates. so she and I both have met and enjoyed the company of people that we wouldve never met otherwise.
Ive been supported greatly by my wife and couldnt have progressed very much without that. Besides exposing a genre of music she had no interest in.( She knows who Martin Hayes and Kevin Burke are for sure 😉 ). and her meeting and getting to know others that share my same passion and play in the same circles as me..thats really the only things that my hobby has carried over to her. She has no interest in playing...thats my thing.
For the most part I try and practice in a part of the house that doesnt interfere with HER down time. So over the years havent had too many complaints. She is just as busy as anyone else so if i did happen to push the boundery and play upstairs a bit too long I deserve any gentle nudge that maybe it would be better to move to the music room or maybe come join her instead for the rest of the evening. 🙂

When I first got my violin I had ‘oh no can’t you learn the recorder, the violin is a very difficult instrument ‘ from my dad but I saw him at the weekend and I played Moon River and he asked me to play it for my uncle in California !! So that’s changed a bit!!
I have no practicing complaints from Dan .. in fact he bought me my violin. He will always point out music shops to go in when we are out and about and will often show me books I might like.
Can’t say I’ve really influenced people , maybe swayed them somewhat .
Good thread nice to hear your experiences.
